Bench Seat?

Postby TomG » Sat Jan 03, 2015 3:59 pm

I recently acquired this Super A and was surprised to see that it has a bench seat instead of the normal steel pan type. Was this type of seat original to the tractor or was it something that was added? It and the mounting brackets look like they belong.

Thanks,

Tom

It is called a "Deluxe Seat". They came out on the later tractors.

Thanks, that's good to know. My uncle thought the tractor was a 1954, but the ID plate is missing. Hopefully he's right because that would mean the tractor and I would be the same age. :)

A cast code off the engine can pretty much tell you the year.

The deluxe seat was a very common farmer upgrade on Super As. It is much more comfortable than the standard pan seat. Looks like yours has a fast hitch, that was another popular add-on.

Get some casting codes and we can get an idea of age. Codes will be number•number•letter, example 1•3•A.

Thanks.

I should be back out there tomorrow, so I can grab the casting code off the engine.

I put one on Old Ugly. It actually came off my "pretty" Super A, my grandfather installed back in 1961 or so during an overhaul & repaint. There is nothing to the conversion, just unbolt the old seat and bolt the deluxe one on. It has an adjustment for sliding the seat front and back built in. They are way more comfortable than the pan seat, and to tell the truth, I like how it makes the tractor look. You can get the nice silver cushions, much like the originals, from Steiner. The only thing you have to do is remember to take the bottom cushion off and put it in the truck if you haul the tractor anywhere!

Find some armrest cushions too, you will really like them. Sorry I waited so long to get mine!

Just be sitting down and wait 30 minutes after eating before you look at a price for those armrest cushions. Might not hurt to have a bucket handy in case you lose the contents of your stomach, and possibly an AED with someone ready to administer shocks to restart your heart.

Those armrests were new to me the first time I saw them for sale! I never remember a tractor equipped with them around here. I didn't get any because I have sort of a wide, uh, "footprint" when I sit, so I believe they would be in my way!

I was just thinking, of the half-dozen or so Super A's still on farms in my immediate neighborhood when I was a kid (early 80s) I would say at least 4 of them had been re-equipped with that deluxe seat. I can't remember a 140 at all that didn't have a deluxe seat. Growing up, a tractor with a pan seat looked funny!

You need at least the right side one, makes plowing much more comfortable.
