Hello,
I plan on going to look at a 49 Super A this evening and was wondering where to look for cracks in casting of the engine and transmission housings? Any help would be appreciated. Pictures would help me to know what I am looking at.

Well I can give you a few places to look......I wish I would have looked a bit closer on my 47A
Engine block:
make sure it doesn't look like this:
Rear main finals.
Steering tube attachment point
Front drop spindles and drop tubes
Steering box in general
....well that's all I have....good luck with the Super "A"

Re: Cracks
Freeze cracks on an A engine usually show up on the left side of the engine block, facing the carburetor. Be sure to closely check that area.

Re: Cracks
to what Jim said. I have seen a chunk completely broken out there and held in with silicone form a gasket. Did not seem to hurt the function or strength though.

Re: Cracks
Here is a picture of the area Jim and John are pointing out. Basically between the generator/alternator and carburetor to behind the carburetor. Mine weeps slightly. A little JB weld slowed it down. When I get around to draining the cooling system, I'll work at it some more.
Worksmart not hard!!

Re: Cracks
Idk how common this is on the SA's, but i'm the second one on here to have it so i would look right under the hydraulic pump...i have a 49 SA and mine has a hefty repair there.
