Any Maryland Guys Around - New Farmall 140 Owner Needs Help

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Mon Nov 03, 2014 9:46 am

Hey guys, I have recently been in contact with a gentleman from Maryland that just bought a Farmall 140 tractor. He found me through my YouTube videos and shot me an email. Well, after a couple of phone calls, I have educated him a little more on his tractor and what he has. He has also sent me some pictures to help identify it. I have came to the conclusion (with help from his Serial #) that he has a late 1978 Farmall 140 Industrial. Apparently there is an "H" and a "D" following the serial number and the "J" prefix for the rockford clutch. I told him it was very possible that it was an "H" and "C" for High Crop. But according to his pictures this tractor isn't a high crop/high clearance. Personally I've never heard of a "H" and "D" prefix (together or seperate).

Some of his issues are getting his lights working, getting his carburetor adjusted properly, finding a front snowplow for it, and maybe some other minor things. He said he checked the lights themself and they work, but they don't come on with the switch. I told him to check the fuse and the connections behind the dash, but after looking at the dash, it looks like it had one of those electronic turn signal switches found in the '78 and '79s and now that it's been removed that is probably why they're not working. He has an IT Shop Manual and I sent him the copy of the original IH Owners Manual becuase the IT isn't worth the paper it's on.

I told him that I would do my best to get in touch with someone local to him that would be willing to come over and give him a hand and educate him better on what he has. He is very willing and looks forward to getting some help. He is in the Woodstock, MD area and I will forward his phone number to anyone that is interested via PM.

Chase

They sure did. maybe this one was just ordered with the heavy duty axle and painted yellow.

Y'all let me know if any of you are close enough and wouldn't mind going over to take a look, or if you know of someone.

High Crops did have the heavy duty axles. Can you get a pic of the serial # tag. Sounds like it started out as a high crop. Might have to go deeper into serial numbers to find out the whole story.

Guys....I got a call from Bill this weekend and he is attempting to repair his tractor himself, and is very exhausted with it. He said he can't get anyone to help him, nor does he know of anyone. I wish I lived closer or I would assist him and I've done as much as I can over the phone. He has purchased a rebuilt carburetor and a rebuilt governor (one of Gene Benders rebuilds) from me and has yet to fix his problems. I advised him that he needed to investigate his problems first before throwing parts at it, but he insisted on having the parts on hand. Now, he said he has broken a piece inside the rebuilt governor trying to install it, and doesn't know what he is doing at all. He said he is just exhausted with the whole situation and is about to give up and just sell the tractor. He said it is a nice tractor but just needs some maintenance that he can't do, nor find anyone to help him. Looks like a 1978 or 1979 Farmall 140 from info I've received through email, so should be a decent tractor.

I told him that I would try once again to find someone that would be willing to help him repair his tractor.....or at least figure out what his issues are. He knows little about mechanics, and tractors; so I know he will be appreciative of ANYTHING. I am pretty sure he is also willing to compensate someone for their time and help. Let me know if you or anyone you know can help him out. Otherwise, he is just going to sell his tractor and I don't want him to feel that he has to do so.

Thanks,
Chase

This thread was started in Nov. 2014, so chances are pretty good that the problem is solved. Certainly do appreciate your offer to help, that is what we are here for.

Pops,

No need to feel dumb. We have all done it. :) :) The important thing is that you were making a sincere offer to help, and that is what we are all about here, so you will fit in very well. Yesterday I drove a hour to help someone out a bit and then drove an hour home. Before it is all over it will require another trip.

Ya this is an old thread revived for sure.
It's still interesting.
I thought high crop Farmall which would explain the absent foot throttle. The rims and front spindles aren't HC though. Odd. Most of the Internationals used on the east coast went used for farming and had the foot throttle. Maybe this one was actually farmed and was FT delete.
Perhaps the buyer, as I would, wanted the Industrial model just for that re-enforced from axle.

I would like to add that a guy here in ALabama bought a nice original Farmall 140 (mid-60s model) that has the foot throttle but no square axle and no engine brace. From what I can tell the tractor is all original. Very odd for sure.
