Battery leads

Hi. As some of the forum readers may have guessed I'm trying to restore my SAV to close to original and have spent hours looking at images on the net getting information, one question that I would like to know is if the battery leads are different colours ie. Red for Negative to the starter and Black for Positive to the earth ? or the other way around. thanks Brian.

I do not know what a proper color is, but as I understand it they were already on the tractor when it was painted, so they were either red or red.

...or black, then got painted red!

Yeah, this is definitely something that doesn't really matter. You can paint em red but make sure to mark which is which. Besides, if you have a battery box with a cover you won't see it anyway.

Hi. I thought it was a simple question, the world standard is RED for positive and Black for negative. I had no intention of painting the leads as they can be purchased red or black. And as far as factory painting goes I don't think they would have lifted to top off the battery cover to paint the leads, I was just interested if the production factory line identified the leads in any way to avoid cross connection.That's when it makes a matters.

I imagine the cables were black, probably had black overspray. I can remember "genuine" IH cables from battery to starter and it was blank.

Wasn't the ground lead a bare woven strap, not a cable?

Hi. If it was a flat strap earth I sure would like to know, even which bolt the earth connected too. Mine had a loose battery under the seat because the battery box was long gone, this is the reason I have nothing to use as a reference. My SAV # is 312014 about 1951. thanks.

A lot have added the flat strap over the years, but the original ground was an actual cable--a very short one. It connects to one of the mounting holes on the back of the instrument panel, which also helps hold the battery box.

Thanks for the link do doubt about it it's a round cable.I think I will go with a red positive earth until I see otherwise.Thanks one more item done.

Here is what I bought to put together my cables for my 51 SAV. I am using black cloth covered cable for both the pos and neg. 51 seems to have been a very popular year for the SAV. I have had 4, and all were 1951 models. I am down to 2, and a couple of 100 Hi-Clears.

I like the look of your woven cable,if there is any logic in restoration work if the other electrical cables used had a woven cover why not the battery cables? I see you have used the correct 90 degree positive terminal connection. I will check this out and if available in Australia. Thanks.

I can't tell a lie: I'm a little envious! I have mentioned on here before when I was growing up in the 80s there were two Super AVs within 5 miles of me. Let em both get away. Really want one, one of these days for my Super A collection.

G'Day. Nice paint job I hope mine looks as good. Its winter here and waiting for it to warm up before starting to paint, using the time to order and sort out a few items.I have taken all the parts back to bare metal and then make a frame to paint it on with the wheels off so I can move it in and out of my garage.
