A Starter Rod and other questions.

Postby CPIII » Tue Mar 25, 2014 1:50 pm

I am looking for a picture of how the starter rod is normally set up on a 1947 A. The one I recently purchased is missing the rod and the lever....i have tried searching the web but haven't been able to find any good pictures on what I am missing. I think i could fabricate what I need but not sure how it is supposed to be. Also mine doesn't have a gen\alternator and I can't really see where it is supposed to be mounted. If anyone have pics of a 12V alternator upgrade I would appreciate it.

I don't know if a 53 is the same, but this is what mine looks like. I've seen alt conversions on these and it goes right where the gen is.

here is the alternator setup on my SA. you need to fabricate a bracket to move the alternator forward and up a little. I moved the tension arm up to the water outlet as well.

the a and the super a have different starter rods. the A is a push rod that you activate with your foot, as opposed to the pull rod on a SA. i'll try to get a couple more pictures for you tonight

Thanks a bunch Art....that is exactly what I was looking for a close up pic of the starter rod setup and the Alternator bracket.....if you could get the picture of the bracket that would be great. I think I know how to fabricate it but am looking for as many examples as I can find. As far as the starter rod.....you don't have to worry about that...I will wait hoping someone with a A of the same year range will eventually post some up close pics. As I don't have any rods or levers on my A ....so nothing to go by.

I used a piece of 1/4" plate 5" X 2" and welded the existing gen bracket to the top portion 3.5 inches forward of the lead edge of the plate to move the alternator forward and up. if I made another one, I would use a plate 2.5" X 5" to raise the gen bracket a little higher to clear the block.

I used a Hitachi 14231 alternator for this, but if you want to go one wire use the NAPA one for $44 with core.

the upper bracket simply has an extender on it to reach the alternator, and is moved up from the lower water inlet to the fan attachment point.

I took some pictures tonight, i'll send them in the morning

I will have to look at my A tomorrow and see how it is!---I know it has a curly end on it and it sits WAY low on the tractor,-- hard to see/find and , don't take this to the bank YET, BUT I think the starter switch/button is on the bottom side of the starter and not on top side as the Super A is!----A LOT of different parts between A and Super A! thanks; sonny

the tension arm (although it is a little hard to see) is attached to a 2" extension bolted to the same location as the radiator support. it reused the stud removed from the former location of the bracket.

Here is a pic of my 1945 International A starter and rod. I just glanced at the parts manual but I did not see a diagram/parts breakdown of the starter rod. The only info I found was on page 67 giving the part number of the starter rod.
