I need a crash course in what to look for with things that could possibly be wrong with one and what questions I should ask the owner.
I am a rookie to the whole tractor thing and I have done some reading up on things but I am barely wet behind the ears and need some help.

Good questions to ask I can think of off the top of my head are:
Has the engine been rebuilt?
Are there any leaks anywhere? (Touch Control, Radiator, Oil, ect)
Does it have the drawbar? (I know it sounds silly, but when I bought mine the guy "forgot" about it and didn't bother to tell me until I noticed)
If they are offering any implements make sure all the pieces are there.

Aside from what you check on any old tractor, check steering play, see if the left rear wheel wobbles in the housing--Grab top of tire and try to rock the tractor side to side. If there's play you'll feel and hear it. Not a deal breaker but lets you know about how much heavy use it's had. Check the seal on that final drive too, down close to the drawbar. If there's much wobble it'll probably be leaking.
