Farmall A Starter

Okay all. It's been while but with work going into overdrive, setting up for retirement, selling the house, moving, locking down my next career, looking for a new house and the 1 year old boy I keep chasing around, needless to say--I've been a bit busy.

I've gotten the starter apart and have been working on it with my Dad in what little spare time we each have. It finally cranks over at a healthy fast speed but it's not moving forward or backwards on its own. Is there a reason I'm not understanding as to why this is? The bendix isnt stuck. Is there a solenoid somewhere that controls this?

I'm over my head on this starter and we have put about 6 hours into rebuilding this thing (it was a total disaster when we took it apart). Wondering if itd be easier to sell this as a rebuildable unit and buy a reman. Id hate to go that route but I'm getting a little frustrated.

When you turn the gear in one direction, it should turn the starter shaft. When You turn it the other way, the gear should move down the shaft towards the nose. If it will not screw down towards the nose, it is stuck and needs to be freed up. When using the starter, the starter spins up so quickly that inertia causes the gear to spin toward the nose and engage the flywheel gear. When the engine fires it spins the gear faster than the starter, so it kicks it out. if you have a weak battery or connection, or starter switch it may not spin up fast enough to run the gear out. Has the starter drive been replaced? the identical looking drive is available in a right hand and left hand rotation, and if you have the wrong one, it sill not spin out.

Well the starter is definitely working properly. With a 12.6v battery, it shoots forward and turns the flywheel but just barely. The connections get insanely hot from the resistance and very little happens in turning the flywheel. I'm wondering if the starter is just too far gone, soaking up the power/heating up and thinking I may just drop some money into a new one. Where are folks getting the better deals these days? I did a quick search and there's one for $188 on Amazon, a few for around $120 on Ebay and am curious if there's a convenient untapped source. If I could, I'd rather take the original starter somewhere to get it professionally rebuilt if the price is right.

Check in your area for "auto electrical repair service" and they can repair or check starters/generators/alternators/etc. for most applications (cars/trucks/motor cycles/tractors/small engines of all kinds/etc) ---we have a fully equipped shop about 20 miles from us and have taken many starters/gens./alts to him for repair! thanks; sonny
