I am working on a 1947 Farmall A. The tractor was abused by the previous owner by pulling a 5' bush hog. The 44 tooth pto gear keyway and the pto shaft were wiped out. I installed another used pto unit. When this pto is engaged to run a 5' Woods belly mower, there is a rough growling noise coming from the transmission area. The rear spline shaft caged ball bearings seems to have excessive play. I think I need to remove the spline shaft and replace the bearings and front seal. I know the transmission front needs to be split from the torque tube, but how is the spline shaft removed? Is there anything else I should be looking at that may cause this noise? The noise is present even when the pto is engaged and the tranny is in neutral. Thanks for any replies!

Re: 1947 Farmall A Transmission Spline Shaft Removal
I've rebuilt two of these in the last year, and as I recall, the top transmission shaft comes out the front of the unit. the lower shaft, of course, goes out the rear because the pinion gear is on it.
