Shane Nelson wrote:I put a threaded rod in the lathe and drilled a center in it then screwed it into the threaded insert on the other side so I could find center on the bad holes. I can get a 5/8-11 threaded insert with a 1-12 outside thread but they are $29 plus shipping EACH. I said no thanks. These holes had been opened up and tapped 1" and were out of round, one worse than the other so I had to take an end mill and drill it out and thread it 1 1/8-12 and was able to do the other one 1-12. I will make 2 inserts on the lathe and put them in soon...................

Shane you are like some kind of wizard! :worthy: Looking good! Thanks for the pics , I am fascinated by work like this.

Yes the completed short block has been sitting under a tarp at school for over a year. I’ll soon be able to assemble it enough to try starting it!

That's what I was talking about, a machinist who knows how to correct the bad holes with the minimum torque tube removal. and the minimum number of "inserts" at the end. Great job, Shane!!! Al is lucky to be so close, I may have to call on you some day as well......

O' Whitey's torque tube is out of surgery and is going to make it. Got the 2 steel inserts made and installed then drilled and pinned them with an 1/8" roll pin so they won't move.

Lookin' at that stuff convinces me that I need to move to NC. Great work, Shane.

Shane, that is exactly how it was shown to me. I didn't mention the roll pin, had forgotten completely about that detail. Very Nice Work!!!!! I appreciate a good machinist!

I have always been fascinated by machinist work. And a good machinist makes it look so "easy!" :D

I'm really excited to pick the torque tube up so I can see Shane's work up close. When I get it painted, you won't be able to tell a repair was ever done!

Yesterday I went to see Shane and picked up the torque tube for Ol' Whitey/Bucket of Bolts. He worked miracles on it! By the time I get it all cleaned and painted, no one will ever be able to tell what happened to it! Thanks again Shane for your help! :D

I have to go to Indianapolis later this week for the FFA Convention so I'm going to get the seals/gaskets for the front of the transmission ordered so they will hopefully be waiting for me when I get home. I'll be able to bolt it back together soon!
