Re: Restoration Project: O' Whitey
Got the crank and main bearings in. The crank was good enough it just needed polishing, the mains are on the big side of the spec. Got to get the engine on Whitey apart and see what the cam and governor gears look like; am hoping to do a swap.

I am sitting on the edge of my seat.
Great project.
My 130 had the engine gone through before I bought it.
Basically almost identical to the SA.
The things I rebuilt were:
Tranny
Touch Control
Replaced Touch Control pump. (pretty sure I got the pump from Boss Hog)
Final Drives
New Brakes
Reconditioned Rad
Steering Box (that was a lot of fun)
Have fun, I will help whenever I can.

Hope to get back to it soon. Engine is on the stand in the corner covered in kraft paper. My steering box is going to be a handful too!

Not so much as almost always worn out. Usually new bearings and bushings go a long way to fixing it.

Re: Restoration Project: O' Whitey
Been a long time since an update. The engine has been sitting on the stand, crankshaft installed, for over a year. My Ag. Mech. II class needed a project so I decided there was no time like the present so I turned them loose on it. A few weeks ago I pulled the engine from Ol Whitey and got it into the shop for disassembly. I had a partial engine I bought from Dale Finch that had a nice cam gear/shaft in it so I pulled that along with the lifters and the students installed them. Ol Whitey had a nice governor and gear so I took that in and they got it cleaned and installed. Ol Whitey's clutch and pressure plate looked pretty good but I decided that like Forrest Gump, we might as well keep on run-ning so I got a new clutch and pressure plate, I helped the class install that today. The gasket set included a standard gasket with no speedi sleeve for the crankshaft pulley, so I ordered a different seal that comes with the sleeve. That came this afternoon so hopefully the front cover will be put in place Monday.
I'm going to send the mag out to Rick Spivey so he can work his magic tomorrow. There's an issue with the holes in the torque tube being wallered out so bad It's probably going to take a trip to the machine shop to fix. I want to go ahead and get that done so when they're ready we can bolt the engine back up and I won't have to take it apart again.
More to come....
Progress as of today!
Ol Whitey's engine in progress of getting it into the shop. As you can see things didn't exactly go as planned....
Here's the issue with the torque tube. These are the rear-most bolt holes, on the left side. The right are wallered out too but I think they can be helicoiled.

Don't forget about e-z lok if the holes are too big for helicoils.

It may require some creativity. The holes are 1", Which means there's no one insert I can use off the shelf to fix the holes. Looks like I can drill and tap 1 1/4" threads, screw in an insert with 7/8" internal threads, and then screw in another insert with 7/8" external threads to get 5/8" holes.

Hope to resume soon. Stuff keeps getting in the way....those torque tube holes are such a mess that I’m gonna seek out a machine shop to fix.

If the 1" holes are already threaded, there are inserts to reduce to 5/8".

They were drilled and threaded rather sloppy and those threads are gone.

Re: Restoration Project: O' Whitey
Al, you may consider having them tap the torque tube to the next standard size, and make steel inserts to fit. Ten the steel inserts can be drilled and threaded to the original size you want to restore.

Re: Restoration Project: O' Whitey
O' Whitey's torque tube went in for surgery today. He's gonna have to spend the night, maybe 2 depending on when I can get on the lathe. The 2 holes on the opposite side of the "bad" ones were drilled and tapped to 3/4". Al ask me to fix those as well while I had it. No problem on them, one of them was pretty round so I went to a local fastener store and purchased 2 threaded inserts, 5/8-11 inside thread & 7/8-14 external thread. The one that looked the best I started there and got the insert in it then made a measuring piece with the holes on 4 1/4" centers to get it right. That side is done.

Re: Restoration Project: O' Whitey
I put a threaded rod in the lathe and drilled a center in it then screwed it into the threaded insert on the other side so I could find center on the bad holes. I can get a 5/8-11 threaded insert with a 1-12 outside thread but they are $29 plus shipping EACH. I said no thanks. These holes had been opened up and tapped 1" and were out of round, one worse than the other so I had to take an end mill and drill it out and thread it 1 1/8-12 and was able to do the other one 1-12. I will make 2 inserts on the lathe and put them in soon...................
