Noisy SA Tranmission

Postby spadra » Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:55 am

While the transmission on my SA has never been quiet, it seems to be getting nosier with time ~ A rattling or clicking sound. Sound is noticeable when the tractor is in gear and in motion, less so (but still there) if going down hill in gear or coasting with clutch in. Sound is not noticeable when engine is running and trans is in neutral.

Do I have a bearing that is ready to bit the dust?

Check all the rim to wheel and wheel to hub bolts for tightness. Any wheel weight bolts also.

Don ~ Thanks for the reminder. I rotate the tires on the cars routinely and and re-torque but I couldn't tell you the last time checked the SA's bolts.

Boss - In your learned opinion, when trans bearings fail, is the damage contained to the general vicinity of the bearing or do they trash the entire transmission?

Bearing and sometimes the shaft it rides on. In extreme cases the housing. Check the finials too.
