Several members advised those looking for a SA to check the left final drive by shaking the rear tire laterally. The SA that I have located has some play when this is done. It has a mild whine when the tractor is in motion. It doesn't change when the trans is put in another so I think it comes from the left final drive. Is this a difficult repair? What about parts availability? I plan on using it for a while before doing anything to it. Is that a problem?

Re: Final drive repair
Every one of my non-restored SA's have some play. They will run a long time that way but like all things of this nature you are probably better off sooner than later. Last time I knew all the necessary parts are available. You need to pay close attention to how the bearings act in the final drive housing (should be tight) and whether or not they are trying to turn on the axle shaft.

Re: Final drive repair
I posted this a while back after rebuilding my '49 SA final. It is still doing well, although my Touch Control needs some attention now!

Parts are available, plus I still have some parts left over from my parts tractor. Good luck and holler if you have any questions. There are several SA-familiar folks here!
