Determining year without serial number

I just bought a Super A that was advertised as a '56. I know that isn't right, but the serial number plate is not there. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to determine the year some other way?

Casting dates. IH used letter codes and every major casting has a date code. Actual production was a little later as castings were machined before going to the assembly line. If sales were slow, they would build up in the yard. Here is a link to Cub casting date codes which should be the same for you. http://www.tmtractor.com/id/id_004.htm

Are you sure the serial number plate is missing? A lot of folks don't realize that the serial number plate on an A/Super A is on the seat post underneath the seat. It's not on the frame or engine like on a Cub.

Thanks for the replies. I knew where the plate was suposed to be, but it was not there. The casting dates put it at 1951 or so. The dates for teh engine and transmission were late '50. Great tip! Thanks for the link.

We might be able to narrow it down a little more with the engine number. It is stamped into the block, just below the #1 spark plug.

Thanks Jim, I'll post that this evening.
