When did tie rods change on a SA ?

Postby Dale Finch » Sat Dec 01, 2012 5:29 pm

I was sorting through some of the SA parts I have for sale, and was wondering when they switched from the old-style tie rods with the ball ends, to the newer style? Both the tractors I bought were '48's and I decided to use the older style simply so they matched my cubs in looks! But I don't know why the same year had different ones. Mostly curious, as they obviously cannot be used as spare parts! Perhaps a PO changed them?

The first tractor with the new style was at 318310 which was 1951. The parts book does not say but I think this might have also been when they went to the white background SUPER A decal, similar to the Super C. It is not unusual to see older tractors with newer tie rods because the old ones were replaced at some point.

Did you check the casting #s and not rely on the # on the seat frame

Good point, Boss! I wrote down a bunch of the casting numbers, and will double check them, but I THINK they were generally for a 48. Seat supports could have been replaced, but since I bought it in NC (Boss' FAVORITE source for SA's!!!) chances are the steering was changed over at some time.

Guess I did pick the correct version to use on my restored one. Thanks all!
