Battery / Electrical question & pictures of my battery box

Postby Joel » Sun Sep 23, 2012 4:14 pm

So as you know I've got a Super A1 now. The previous owner told me the battery froze and busted last winter. See pictures. So I plan on cleaning off paint with baking soda mix to neutralize the acid before putting the battery box back together.

My question: What are the chances this battery actually froze and busted and that there is not an electrical cause for this?
Thanks,
Joel

Looks pretty much like my battery that froze and blew up .... so yeah, plausible.

If it froze it would have pushed the sides of the battery out, for a battery to freeze is will have to be dead, I expect it came from jumping with a 12 volt battery. JMO

I was just concerned the generator might be messed up or maybe something was wired backwards. Thanks!

About a year back I was charging the battery on my cub which was parked outside.
While it was charging I set to cutting a link out of a chain with an air powered cut off wheel.
Like I said I was outside in the open air and was also a few feet away from the cub.
As the sparks flew one reached close enough to the battery and BOOM!
Holy #%*@...
I have a 12 gauge shotgun that's not near as loud as the that battery was when it blew. It made my ears ring for awhile.
The end result was a busted battery case that didn't look much worse than the one you have.
Makes me wonder if a similar incident didn't occur with the PO of your tractor.

If the battery is weak or discharged it will freeze. We all know water expands when it freezes!
