SA Transmission seal replacement...

Postby Dale Finch » Fri Oct 14, 2011 12:05 am

I successfully removed the left final and replaced the differential seal that I had forgotten to do when I overhauled the left final earlier. No real problems encountered. Then I just HAD to crank him up and take him for a run around the parking lot. Good oil P, Touch Control worked, all gears worked, good brakes, charging was good, PTO actually worked...in fact everything worked!! The distributor adjustment I did seem to have eliminated the backfiring on shutdown, too.

The BIG problem I have is a leaking transmission seal, and though I really did NOT want to do another tear down, NOW is the time to do it while it is at a good shop with faciltities I won't have at the farm. SO...Next week I will be splitting the tractor at the transmission, and I am soliciting any input from anyone who has done it. I have reviewed what little the two service manuals I have say, and have researched the forum (found some info on the Cub which is much like the SA), but I would like a heads up to any problems I may face.

I have a trailer jack-type rolling splitting stand, and an engine hoist, and had planned to use the stand under the front half of the tractor and the hoist with straps under the transmission, while putting a hydraulic jack under the drawbar to keep the tractor from tipping up. Does this sound like it will work? Any better ideas?

I picked up the gasket and seal from IH today...is there anything else besides the seal and gasket that I need to be concerned with? Any problems getting the seal out? And finally, any potential problems during reassembly?

The entire forum will probably be as happy as I when this project is complete, so I no longer bug you with all these questions!! But I have no one else to ask, and REALLY appreciate this resource! (Oh, I'll be starting back on the cubs when this is done, so I guess the questions will probably continue!! :D)

Soon, you are going to be the "go to" person for answers!! Did you replace this seal originally? Just curious why the leak.

I didn't do anything to the transmission...obviously a mistake! I think the only other seal that was not replaced is the front engine seal, which (of course!) is also leaking a small amount, but I decided to NOT replace that one now.
Next tractor :big what: I decide to do a TOTAL restoration on will get a TOTAL restoration!!!

Hey, if I didn't have this seal to replace, I would only have the grill to finish up, paint and install, then I would have to start on hte Woods 59! I already have the bags of sand...am just waiting for cooler weather!

Have you made any progress? I'm fixing to attempt this same job after I complete my current project ( Right side brake and seal replacement) I'm going to be watching this topic closely.

Sorry it took so long to reply...this is my first post in almost a month. I just returned yesterday from a dive trip, and wasn't going to get onto the forum until I had a loooooong time to spend catching up!! But...

I did finish the transmission seal replacement. The main problems were getting the shaft coupling seperated (took a bit of muscle to get the tapered bolts loose) and finding replacement rubber washers (ended up having them made at a local rubber place). Otherwise, with a rolling jackstand on the front, and a hoist and then blocks under the rear half, everything went well. I THINK I posted some photos (under a different post?), but it has been so long, that I have forgotten now! Let me know if you are tackling this and have any questions...I MIGHT be able to help you or someone else can jump in!

I have a leak on my SA at the front of the trans that leaks out of a small hole. Is that where yours leaked?

Yep! That's the one (#27 on http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Super%20A%20-%20Super%20AV/TC-39B%20Parts%20Catalog/Page%20166.jpg ...but I may have been a tad hasty when I reassembled everything. Part #52 (the gasket for the countershaft) MIGHT be leaking a tad. Since the transmission seal was definitely leaking, and there was no other SEAL, I did not really check the gasket (#52), but there is a VERY smal leak still...not enough to go back in though. Just wanted to mention it, because it might be something you want to check while you are there.

Here is the post on the replacement. http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=65406 Good luck!

Mine is not a real bad leak at all but I hate any leaks. That might be a next winter project.
