I went back and forth in my mind today as to whether I would pull the right final on my Super A. I finally made up my mind when I ordered the seals...should be here from NAPA in the morning. SO.......I spent the latter part of Tuesday afternoon getting it ready: removed the drawbar, rear rockshaft, seat & right fender, loosened the platform, disconnected the brake. In other words, spent over an hour undoing what I had spent days DOING!!! I was quite depressed. But I couldn't leave the leak from (I think) the right diff seal, and the brake had never been off that side and I began to feel there was something not right with it.
Though I rebuilt the left final, I have never removed the right side, and the manual is a bit vague on the process, so I was hoping someone would give me the steps for this. In other words, do I remove the wheel, then the final, then the differential housing? The manual implies removing the whole thing, but this is NOT a Cub final...it is HEAVY!!. And I am worried about how the shaft comes out. I do not want to bend or break anything.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Yes Dale its pretty straight forward, just like you said, take the wheel off, make sure you got the tractor blocked good,[ not under the right axle housing], remember the right wheel is heavier then the left, get you a jack under the final and pull it straight out, it has the long axle, then remove the housing and then you can put your seal in if you done the left you wont have any trouble.
With no volunteers to help and no information provided, what's a person to do? Jump right in and JUST DO IT!!! Here are some photos of todays accomplishments toward moving forward again!
After making sure the front axle was solidly wedged (slightly different from the Cub):
...and jacked up:
...I strapped onto the right rear wheel & removed the 6 wheel bolts:
...removed the wheel:
...then made sure the jack was lowered so weight was on the left wheel. I left the platform on, but unbolted from the chassis & held in place by brake/clutch pedals, & able to be moved out of the way. I strapped onto the final assembly, unbolted it, and removed it:
...I cleaned the differential side, chased the threads, and removed the old seal:
...unbolted the differential shaft housing and carefully pulled it from the shaft, exposing the break drum:
...drum held firmly in place by the set screw:
...brakeband was in place in the housing:
...removed the Differential Shaft Bearing Cover, Gasket, Lock Ring and Bearing:
...AFTER loosening the break drum set screw, I "tapped" the end of the shaft to push it out the rear axle housing and dislodge the break drum:
...making sure I kept the woodruff key for the break drum, I slid the drum off the shaft at the other end:
...and laid everything out for cleaning:
One problem so far: if you look at this photo, you will see the bottom dowel (one of two) is completely flush in the rear axle housing:
This means that only the top dowel is keeping the two housings FIRMLY positioned causing the bolts to potentially wear. I need to see if I can pry it out so it engages the shaft housing upon assembly.
Tomorrow the saga continues!
You're making great headway Dale! That alignment pin should pry back into position easily and you'll be ready for re-assembly before you know it.
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Wow ! I really appreciate what you posted. I messed up that final and have a broken bolt still in it. I plan on getting a housing ,rebuilding it and doing a complete swap. Thanks BD !!
I am hoping to get the reassembly photos posted...all went very well, and so far (knock on wood) after 4 days, no leaks! Thanks for everyone's encouraging words!
