On my SA, the belt drive unit filler plug is rounded out and I can't remove it. It was recessed for a 1/2" square socket drive, but it's all rounded out. Vise grips won't work either, so I guess I'll have to braze a nut on it to remove it. My question, does the unit come off easy by just removing the 4 mounting bolts? I'd rather braze it off the tractor. Is there anything inside that the heat will destroy, like an oil seal?

Re: SA belt drive
To answer your questions:
Yes, 4 bolts and it comes off. Just be careful of the shims. They set the gear mesh.
There is an o-ring inside, but I believe it will stay with the tractor when the pulley housing is removed. There is an oil seal at the shaft where the pulley wheel attaches.
Now for my question:
Why do you want to remove the plug? There is no need to take it out. I'd leave it alone.

Another reason I love this forum. That note went into my book on the SA.

Re: SA belt drive
Jim, I wanted to take it out so I can fill the drive with oil. I pulled the drain plug and it's empty, no oil. But after your post and looking at the manual, it says the unit is lubricated from the transmission oil. It says this plug is an inspection hole, not a filler hole. So I agree with you, I'll leave it alone.

You may want to recheck that drain hole.I thought mine was empty as well but i stuck a wire in there and it was plugged with old goo and some really nasty stuff came out.

Re: SA belt drive
I cleaned mine out with diesel. I ran it through my air compressor and flushed it real good. Did that a couple times and ran it with it in there then replaced with oil.

Re: SA belt drive
I am having trouble finding the seal/oring that seals the fit between belt drive and pto housings. Item# 13 on page 268. Has anyone found where to get them?
Thanks

Re: SA belt drive
First off, this is a very old thread. When you have a new question, start a new thread. Second, when you reference a part, do not use page and item numbers from the Parts Catalog. Those change between different versions of the catalog. My Super A catalog doesn't even have 268 pages. Use the part number, which in this case is 358208R1.
It is a fairly large diameter o-ring, so you aren't likely to find it just anywhere. I searched the part number with google and found a list of potential places to check. I also checked Messick's online inventory and they show 8 of them on hand. Have you tried checking with your local CaseIH dealer (Lamb and Webster)?
