Froze tractor! Sunday is the day.

Postby cjpenny89 » Fri Jan 26, 2007 9:00 am

Well Sunday AM I am heading to get the tractor I hope! One way or another it is coming home.
I am finishing up my tire sleds today. this is what I am doing what do you think.
1-1/2" plywood yes 1-1/2" thick dad had it from the boat works about 30 years ago.
there 36" long then a 30 degree front angle ski 12"
there will be 2x6 sides and back to make a poket with eye bolts to strap it to the tire. Then on the bottom of the plywood ski I will screw old pole barn tin to it to make it slide better up the ramp?

If this doesn't work and I can not move it with the dodge 4x4 becasue of the snow I will try thawing it out with heaters and stuff. I am taking tools so I can pull the shifter out and the rear pto cover off to help put heat on it to get it out. I have rose bud propane heater to aply direct heat.

I think I am going to try to remove the front snow blade to help me get it on the trailer.
can anyone think of anything I might take?
taking tools
canvas tarp
1-1/2 chain fall
cheap electric winch
torpedo heater
ros bud heater
tire sleds
ratchet straps
chain binders
chains
(2) 3 ton jacks
any thing else?

Chad - be careful! Moving the tractor on skis, skids or whatever you choose to call them will make it difficult to control. Stopping it is as difficult as getting it to move in the first place. I really think I'd try thawing it first. Go tent the tractor and fire up the heaters. Walk away and have a leisurely breakfast or lunch and go back and roll it on the trailer. If that fails, then your skis can be used.

You will be carrying all our best wishes with you. Bet when you get er done you will wonder what you were worrying about.
Bring rope or tie downs to hol;d it on the trailer when you gaet it on.

I updated my list.

Big dog yes I agree it might be tough to stop!
I have to jack it up to make sure the rear wheels are no longer stuck in the dirt so I might just put the skis on it.
I am taking 2 torpdo heaters and my generator to run them.
We just got 3 or 4 more inches of snow so this will make it more fun.

EEK! Rope to tie it on the trailer?!

Chains preferred, rated ratchet straps will work too.

Chad,

Good luck with the adventure. Remember: Memories are made from whatever doesn't go as planned.

How big is your truck?

blocking
air source for front tires
something to tie the blade up so it will load along with the tractor
Long heavy pry bar
ratchet come-along for backup
hot coffee and donuts 8)

If you're prepared for everything it will practically load itself very quickly. :D

How hilly is the terrain where you're dragging this tractor?

Quite frankly, I don't think the skis will slide that well. You don't want them to slide so well you can push the tractor by hand anyway  They just need to be smooth so they slide when given sufficient encouragement by your 4x4.

Heck, if they slide so good that you can push the tractor out, more power to ya! You won't even have to unhook the truck from the trailer. :P

Taking the blade off sounds like a good idea too.
