What is this half-moon indentation on the side of the engine block of my Super A? It's located smack in the center of this picture. Looks kinda funny to me...

I don't know what you are talking about but I would be concerned about the grapes on the welds.

Allen,
I am not sure on this, but I have an idea. IH used that same engine block on a lot of different tractors. Our IH 4000 forklift has the exact same gasoline engine block, but it is in a different configuration from the A. My guess is that it is a cutout for a starter or some other auxiliary piece of equipment. Anyway, just a hunch.

It looks original, but it looks odd with that bolt right there in the casing, and with the hole going right through to the bell housing...

I think those grapes are on the loader mount, not on the tractor...

oK where it is but poor welds are weak. Don't want anything to suprise you while using it.

Your tractor has a power unit engine. Power unit starters mount from the front like the Cub while the A starter mounts from the rear. The big notch in the block is for the starter. Your engine also has an oil dipstick, which was not used on the original engine.

Wow, no kidding! So I guess I'll manufacture a small plate to cover that gap and use that bolt to hold it in place, and go from there...

I'm hoping that doesn't limit me in any way?
