Super A Throw Out Bearing?

Postby ricky racer » Tue Feb 20, 2024 9:28 pm

Does a Super A have a roller bearing style TOB or a graphite puck type TOB like a Cub?

Could have either. I think the graphite bearing was more common. It was a little less of a problem than in the Cub because it was supported by a sleeve on the shaft (stayed centered better).

Thanks Jim. I'm trying to help a neighbor get his Super A working. So far I've rebuilt the distributor and installed it on the tractor. The thing runs really well now but the clutch action is erratic. Some times it will disengage and you can easily shift into gear and other times it won't disengage and won't let you put it in gear. Once in gear it will make a little noise (I'm assuming it's the TOB making the noise) as you release the clutch but it will engage smoothly and you can pull smoothly away from a stop. Some times it will disengage completely and allow you to come to a smooth controlled stop but more times than not, it won't disengage.

I adjusted the free play today because it had to much and I greased the TOB both on the side and on the bottom zerks. I've got about 1" of free play at the pedal an the TOB was about 1/8" from the clutch fingers and the action looked good with no broken springs or other obvious issues. I'm just trying to figure it out, hoping I don't have to split the tractor.

on the left side of the tractor there is a metal plug about 1 " round, it pops out so you can grease the bearing, you should be able to look in the hole and see what you have

Yes, I've greased the two zerks on the TOB. I've visually inspected the clutch and TOB through the hand hole in the bottom of the bell housing. Visually, I don't see anything that is suspicious.

I hate to suggest this. But I associate those symptoms with a clutch disk that has shed some of its lining. The loose pieces end up in places where they can cause mischief.
