Super A Timing

Postby tst » Fri Jan 12, 2024 6:40 pm

I have a 51 Super A that was apart when I got it, governor was out, I see timing marks to line it all up ,the crank pulley has notches like a cub but I do not see a pointer any where to align them with, its been painted, I do not see any sign of a pointer broken off, manual really does not show one
where is it located ?
thanks

Tim,

The timing marks are on the flywheel, in front of the ring gear. If I'm wrong someone will be along shortly to give you the correct info.

Yes, what Bill aid. The timing mark is on the outer surface of the flywheel, marked "D C 1-4". View it through the roundish hand hole in the bottom of the bell housing. The mark to align it is a vertical rib cast into the half-moon cover in front of the flywheel.

Once you find the mark, you may want to add a dab of white paint at the timing mark to make it easier to find next time.

And, Tim, I found it very difficult to find it & line it up. You definitely need 2 people...one unlucky one on their back!

This is from an I &T SHOP MANUAL...not very clear in the photo, but neither I'd the actual mark. I painted a more visible mark on mine!

I went through my SA photos, and this is the only one I could find. I remember having to use sandpaper to find it (thats why I painted it!), and I believe the timing "pointer" is on the half-moon housing cover. Sure makes you appreciate the cub's system!!

(Click on photo to enlarge...timing mark is at bottom center just below the single whit dot.)

Note: The arrows were so I could find it, since I was doing it by myself!

I have a 130 with no pointer. I guess it is the same for the 100-130?

Right. The pointer was added for the 140/240.

Maybe I'm just too dumb to know any better, but I have ignored the timing marks in the past. I just got #1 to TDC on compression and then went from there.
