Super AV, Cub, and C questions?

Postby customcutter » Sun Jan 08, 2023 1:11 pm

My 92yr old FILaw has a Super AV that he bought almost 20 years ago to restore. It is still sitting in the shop. I thought I might try to get it running again. He has the front and rear implement bars, and some sweeps or cultivators. I'm not sure of the terminology, so please forgive me if I call it by the wrong name. He does not have a drawbar for it and I have looked a couple of times. I have found a couple and they want an arm, leg, and first born child for them. He has a drawbar off of a Cub, and it looks like I might be able to bolt it directly to the rear bars with longer bolts intalled in the existing holes in the bars? Would this put undue strain on the frame housing and possibly break the wheel housings?

He was given some bars and implements that supposedly came off of a Cub. Will they work on the Super AV or a C? Or are the post to short to function on the taller SAV and C?

I am asking about the C because there is a restored C nearby that I am considering buying but it is a "parade" tractor and doesn't have any attachments, bars, or implements.

Thanks for any information,
Ken

A drawbar from a Cub is not interchangable with a Super A / Super AV

The universal mounting frames (terminolgy given by IH to the parts that attach to the tractor that the cultivator tool bars attach to) are not interchangable between a Cub, Super A or Super C.

There are even some differences in the universal mounting frames of the Super A and the Super AV

SamsFarm:

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like the "parade" tractor is out as far as a purchase. Only looking for something that could be used to garden with at this time. Sounds like I need to look for a tractor that includes the tool bars, tools, and any implements that might be available.

Usually the total cost is less if you can find one that includes some attachments. JMHO

I had a set of front mounted cultivators for my Super C which are the same as the regular C....The front tool bars and the mountings are these pretty massive wings that attach to specific mounting surfaces and then connect to the rock shafts....I would say they aren't compatible with any other tractor and I doubt fronts would mount on a C

Thanks Stan, Yes, I think you are correct. The few that I've inquired about on FB usually have a belly mower at best and nothing else as far as tooling. I don't know what happens with all of the tooling that the tractors were probably bought with.

Fortunately my FIL has everything for the SAV, except for the drawbar. I've only found 2 over the past few years, they were over $500 ea. and not within driving distance unfortunately. One I found was over $500 and wasn't even an original drawbar, something someone had done a very poor job of fabricating IMHO. But, if it worked for their needs that's the main thing.

He also acquired some cultivators, sweeps, etc. for a Cub, that's why I was asking if it was interchangeable.

We are in S Al as well near Geneva, Samson area.

I think there are a set of front tool bars for a Cub along with the cultivators, sweeps, etc.

The Super C that I referred to as a "parade tractor" had no tooling, tool bars, etc. It said it was restored, but according to the serial number I looked up it is a C, but it did have a wide front end on it. I didn't know that they came with a wide front end until I looked up the serial number.

Thanks for the link and offer of an A drawbar. We have a couple of drawbars that I'm pretty sure I can fab something from when the time comes.

Yes, I found that thread last night and read the first five pages and the last page where he fabbed the drop section for a drawbar. His looks like the drawbar in the Farmall documentation. I thought that the Farmall AV drawbar looked like the drawbar here. (Not selling, just posting a link. If against forum policy please delete.) https://www.ebay.com/itm/185310008784?h ... R8Km9vC0YQ

The drawbar in the ebay link is a correct Super AV drawbar. You might want to check with JP (link at bottom of page) to see if he has one.

I suppose you could start with a regular Super A drawbar and fabricate some longer side plates that would get the drawbar down to the proper height.

Thanks for the reply and information. For now I think I am going to concentrate on seeing if I can get it to run. I turned it over by hand 4-5 rotations, then hooked a battery charger up to it. It did engage the starter when I bumped it up to 225CCA's on the charger, but the battery is beyond dead. The battery cables and ground will need to be cleanup as well. Radiator and gas tank were empty. I didn't check for spark. It appears to have the original magneto with an external coil. I didn't pull the cap, it started to rain by then and wanted to get out of the shop and back to the house before the front comes in.

Ken, You might need to prime the oil pump before trying to start the engine. Also in reference to the PM I sent you, take a look at this notice. Buddy's phone number is in the notice. He might be able to help you. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=114408

Stan, thanks for the link to the CubFest. I did a search last night trying to find information on whether the SAV or SA needed the oil pump primed? Nothing came up, so I was thinking that it was a Cub issue? I didn't look at all of the search results, but everything I saw indicated Cub in the thread titles.
