Farmall 140 engine question
I have a 140 early 63 based on the serial number and I’m wondering how to tell which piston sleeve version I would need to replace in this tractor? It looks like somebody might’ve been in it before because the End clearance on the compression rings is way too big, any guidance or helping me much appreciate it

Re: Farmall 140 engine question
You sure you need new pistons & sleeves and just not new rings?
Sounds like you need to do some checking of the bore diameters and pistons for wear.
If those are within spec, then you might just need new rings.
You also have to check the bores for a ridge, and that ridge might need reamed before new rings can be installed

Re: Farmall 140 engine question
yes measure the bore 1st before anything else, not sure if I have the name right but I think IH sold a updated piston set called "firecrater" that were domed, you may have those, and if the bore is worn those are replaceable cylinders, they press in , I have one apart right now for a rebuild

Re: Farmall 140 engine question
Agree on checks and measurements before changing the sleeves. Back to the original question, The C-123 engine has a 3-7/16 lower bore. The sleeves are the same in all versions of the C-123. The lower bore of a C-113 and C-135 are different so sleeves for those engines will not interchange. By the way, The PDF manuals on this site include the service manual for the C-123. It is "GSS 1295J R2 ENGINE & FUEL SYSTEM C-123, C-135, C-146, C-153 OCR" and is under Service Manuals/Blue Ribbon Service Manuals

Re: Farmall 140 engine question
Any idea if this kit is the right one for this tractor?
For Super A1 and AV-1 serial number 31300 and up, Super C, 100 and 200 (C123 CID 4-cylinder Gas) (stepped head pistons), (overbore from 3-1/8 inch to 3-1/4 inch). Contains sleeves, pistons and rings, pins and retainers, upper gasket set (with head gasket) and pan gasket. Reference ID: BIFH1159

Re: Farmall 140 engine question
The description sounds about right. However, I don't see the 140 listed. C-123 engines with engine numbers 65,000 and up were used in the 140 and 240. There would be some differences in the gaskets on those later engines. A little more looking might find you a set that lists the 140. (A lot of vendor descriptions are a bit messed up).

Re: Farmall 140 engine question
Piston pics-Has anybody seen a piston like this one? With the top compression ring placed in the cylinder near the top non wear area it was a large gap close to .100 inch?

Re: Farmall 140 engine question
I can't say that I've ever seen a piston with 3 compression rings in addition to the oil wiper ring. Can someone more knowledgeable confirm if the thin top ring groove is for a compression ring, or something else?

Hello Rick,
The Pistons and three compression rings each, I think this picture is the one where we took one ring off and slid it down in the bore to Check ring gap

Re: Farmall 140 engine question
I was doing some digging around looking at images on the Internet and I seen some sealed power brand pistons that are the style top on this dome so I’m guessing maybe it was an aftermarket kit unless someone knows of seal powered supplied some for production?

I used to own an automotive machine shop and was surprised to find out that there was only 6 major suppliers of valve in the WORLD, even less than that for camshafts. If you buy a cam you have a 96% chance it came from only 1 of 4 companies. So don't be surprised if parts from an OEM or a company known for racing parts are the exact same except the box or the price tag on them.
