1954 Super A1 steering rods

Postby bt73000 » Mon Sep 13, 2021 8:05 pm

I have a late super A that I am working on and need a new set of steering rods. The previous owners had this tractor set out wide and over the years the rods have been bent and damaged. I want to set it back in to narrow width, but feel pretty confident that these are going to more trouble than what they are worth and would like to replace them all together. Only trouble is, I can't find these for sale as complete assemblies anywhere. Yesterday tractor has the parts of each one listed individually, and to buy them like that and put them together is going to run around $200 each! This maybe my only option if I want new parts, but if someone has found a way around this please let me know! Thanks Mike

If you have access to heat, try heating the inner part and bending/tapping (ok, maybe hit kind of hard!) Otherwise, try to find a good used set. Burch Store Tractor is in Greensboro, JP Tractor in MO would probably have them as well.

Thanks for the reply Al. I may be able to fix these, but I did this on a previous tractor and it was quite the chore. I ended up replacing all the parts with the exception of the outer tubes ( trying to save money) and ended up having to cut off the inner rod sections of the old pieces and reweld them to the new tie rod ends because the parts I bought where not made to the same size as the originals. Anyway, if I had spent another $150 I could have saved the trouble.

I was hoping someone had run into this before and would post that the rods from another model would fit and the aftermarket just had not listed them correctly. These rods on my tractor are the early automotive style rods that are smaller in diameter than the later 130/140 rods. I don't know if a 100 has the larger ones, but I know my 130 does.
