Serial number

Postby MarkAkerman » Mon Jul 19, 2021 4:44 pm

I have a super A. I found the serial number but it doesn’t match up with anything I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
7540 is all I can see in lower right portion of the plate.

Are you sure it is a Super A and not an A?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I guess that’s possible. It has old super A decals still on it. Is there a way to figure that out?
Thanks for the response.

What you probably read (misread actually) is the max idle RPM. Max idle should be 1540. Since you say it is at the lower RIGHT, it sounds like a plate used from about 1950 on. The line above the RPM should have the serial number (stamped in). The line above the serial is the model name (probably "FAA"). It was screened on so could be weathered off or would not be visible if painted over.

Hi,
Below is a listing at TM Tractor showing a new serial number plate, you can look at the pic and see the writing on the plate. It is listed for the Cub, but other IH tractors used it also.
This plate was used from 1950 - 1955, it says.
There were other styles of plates before and after those years.

Use a light to see the numbers on the plate. :)

Sometimes, doing a pencil rubbing helps stamped numbers become more visible.
Put a piece of thin paper over the serial and scribble over the area.

If it's made in the 50-51/52ish era, they didn't stamp the numbers well--IH used a weird font (I guess that's what you'd call it) and they can be very hard to read.
