Transmission Repair

Postby agasbarre66 » Tue Jan 05, 2021 8:58 am

We re trying to replace the bearings on the input shaft, but cannot get the top gears out, looks like the back end unscrews, but before we really force it, we want to make sure. or is there something else we're missing. Thanks. It's a 1941 A.

As I recall, you get the gears and rear bearing out by removing the shaft towards the back, which requires removing the PTO. The shaft is held in place by the drive flange on the front of the shaft. The flange is held on by a cap screw into the front end of the shaft. To get at that, you have to split the tractor between the transmission case and the bell housing. The front bearing, along with an oil seal, is held in place in the transmission housing by a retainer that is attached to the front side of the transmission housing. It is also accessible once the tractor is split. A look at the diagram in the parts catalog should help make this clear. Now that you have 2 posts, you have access to the PDF manuals through the quick links at the top of this page. If you don't have an A and B parts catalog, you should be able to find one there.
