140 Transmission Level Plug

Postby workinonit » Fri May 10, 2024 5:33 pm

Can someone tell me where the level plug is on a 140. This one is a 1975. I have the A/AV manual from the library here that shows the level plug at the front left and on the side of the tranny case but mine is not there and I'm not seeing where it actually is. I see the filler and what I think are 2 drain plugs, one front and one back. Maybe that plug in front is the level plug but it's all the way down at the bottom.

It is pretty low, somewhat hidden behind the brake rod. The plug itself may have a square hole for a wrench (like a socket handle) rather than a projecting square like a pipe plug.

Where the Super A manual shows it should be is covered by the left fender. I don't see anything behind that corner of the fender. I'll go look again. I'm wondering if the plug in the front left corner on the bottom is meant to be the level plug on these trannys. That plug it quite a bit higher than the plug in the back. I know this thing is low in oil and I want to find the level plug so I know just how low it is.

Until you figure it out, can't you just drain the transmission and "fill" with the specified quantity. Might be time for a change anyway. :?

It should be below the fender. They don't have a front drain plug. The thing you think is a front drain plug is probably it.

Thanks. Yea, I got it drained and removed the brake linkage. It was back there. Oil definitely needed changing. Need to drain the finals as well.

I drained and refilled with specified amount then used a small wire (coat hanger) as a dipstick to check level. Made a mark on the “dipstick” and checked it through the fill plug hole after that. Much easier than disconnecting the brake rod. Just make sure your dip stick hits the bottom of the transmission housing.

Once I found the level plug it was no big deal. The hard part was finding something that fit the square hole plug. Dropping the brake rod was easy.

I've been reading and following this topic on the Farm all transmission fill check. I have a tip that might help with that square fitting. Looking thru my tool box I discovered a 5/16" Square stock that came out of a common door lock. That and an 8 inch Crescent wrench saved the day. I have picked up a lot of information and wisdom from you guys since I joined the forum in 2007. I don't say thank you enough . I hope this helps someone .

I had a pin punch that was 5/16". That's how I removed it.
