Super A Cuts off when plowing

Postby stellafarmall » Fri Apr 02, 2021 7:27 pm

So I installed a new battery, changed the oil, greased more grease fittings than you can shake a stick at, clean the air cleaner with fresh oil, cleaned fuel sediment bowl, replaced fuel line from sediment bowl to carburetor, replaced spark plugs, plug wires, and distributor on my Super A1. It runs like a top! I was going to hook up the disk and try a few things you guys suggested where the tractor was struggling to pick it up, but I hooked the plow up instead. It’s a single board Leinbach 81. I was trying to get the garden turned over before it rained. Everything appeared to be level and setup correct. I dropped the plow in the ground, gave her full throttle and took off in first gear! She plowed about 20 feet and then cut off. No smoke, no hesitation, just cut off. She fired up immediately and would cut off after a few feet when plowing. After about 20 times of that, I took her to the garage and there she sits. Ran like a top back to the garage. It had the cut off problem when I had the right side down in the plowed row and the tractor was sitting at an angle. I’m thinking about pulling the carb off and giving it a good clean. It looks like fuel is leaking somewhere from it. The sediment bowl was full of trash and there is no inline filter. The gas tank is clean and full of fuel. I know it’s a long shot, but y’all got any ideas for me to start? When I turn the fuel on, should I turn the valve 1/2 a tub, or am I supposed open it up all the way until it stops? I appreciate your help. I hope one day I can repay the favor to someone here!

My first guess is the fuel flow isn't adequate. There is probably enough to run it with no to little load. But it comes up short under full load. As soon as it stalls, the carburetor starts to refill for the next go.

You always open the sediment bowl valve completely or close it completely. Never leave it part way. If you had it open 1/2 turn while you were plowing, that could be the whole problem. Also in case you aren't aware, the elbow where the fuel line enters the carburetor has a screen built into it. It may need cleaning.

OEM valve is designed to operate in the full on position. It has a "back seating" design that will not make contact unless it is fully on. Sounds like you might be starving the engine of fuel when under load if the valve is not fully on. Just my 2 cents. Jim said it little differently but I agree completely.

The sediment bowl is the filter! Between the sediment bowl and the housing there should be a fine mesh brass screen, double check that it is there and it is clean too!

Is this your first time plowing with this tractor and this plow?

See if there's anything sloshing around in the tank that could stop fuel flow.

Also check the vent on your fuel cap. Fuel can't leave the tank if air isn't getting in.

If you suspect low fuel flow, then don't forget to check and clean the strainer that is in the carb. Remove the fuel line at the carb then remove the elbow fitting that goes into the carb (where you just removed the fuel line). There is a small strainer there that is notorious for clogging.

I'd also suggest to remove the carb, disassemble and clean it.

Is the governor set properly? May wish to check that also. The governor regulates the rpm when the engine gets under load. If you are not familiar with that process, chime in. It's pretty easy to adjust the gov/carb.

Ok friends, I have an update! I pulled the fuel hose off the carb and was going to drain the fuel tank in a gas can in preparation to
Find my problem. With the fuel shut Off valve wide open and the gas cap off, there is the smallest stream of fuel out. I’m talking about draining a gallon in 1 1/2 hours slow. Maybe that screen is clogged up!!!??? I would have thought the gas would be draining quicker? Question is can I take that screen off and clean it without tearing the cork gasket up? Also, is this the correct gas cap on my tractor? I don’t see how it vents! Thanks guys!

Blow a little air back through into the tank and see if that helps. If you take the sediment bowl apart you might as well go ahead and plan to replace the gasket.

That is a generic gas cap. It does vent.

If your gas cap does not have TWO (2) vent holes AND does not have the words "Pressure Open Slowly" embossed on the top, then you are eligible to recieve a FREE GAS CAP.

A replacement screen and gasket should be available at any local tractor supply or dealership. If not, TM Tractor Parts, one of our sponsors, has them.

Update and question! I drained all the fuel From my Super A. I replaced the screen and cork gasket in the sediment bowl. It was about half stopped up. I pulled the screen out of the elbow and cleaned it real good, which was stopped up as well. I took the shop vac and got some small trash out of the dry tank. I pulled the carburetor off took it apart and gave it a good cleaning with carburetor and choke cleaner. It looked fairly clean, but the gas in the bowl was very yellow looking, if that makes sense, I was putting it back together and noticed there were two gaskets stacked on each other where the carburetor bolts onto the intake. Both were Fairly new, but I have no clue why two were
Stacked on there. Any advice from my friends? I’m hoping this fixes my problem!! Thanks again! I’m going to get some new gas tomorrow after work and put her back in the garden!

I'd reassemble it with one gasket and see if it works properly.

Check the mounting flange for flatness, they may have used two gaskets to compensate for warpage of the flange.

There are videos of people using a shop vac to clean trash from a fuel tank, it made for an impressive explosion! Totally destroyed the shop vac. Even a very dry tank will be full of fuel vapors and the vapors are the flammable component of gasoline. Please don't do this again!!!

I'm a little late to the party, but if you don't have it back together and running yet, put a can under the fuel shutoff and make sure gas comes through the shutoff alright. I had some pieces of gas cap gasket in the tank on my H years ago that partially plugged the outlet. It would run good until I put the cultivators in the ground, then stall John.
