Starter problems

My starter started acting up and now doesn't do anything. I at first thought it was the hot wire going to it as when I moved it it would start but then after I tightened it it worked for a time or two but now does nothing. I took the wire off, cleaned it. put it back on. I have power to the lights and can hand crank it so I know most of the wiring is ok. I'm just wondering if its the starter or the hand pull switch thing that mounts on top of the starter (the hot wire goes from it to the battery)
