140 value, help!

Postby Slim140 » Mon Feb 06, 2017 12:47 pm

I am looking at buying a 140. Original owner, straight, needs a clutch in it and it's been sitting for several years unran. I know it will need a complete fuel system cleaning. It has fertilize on it, one point hitch & good tires. What is a tractor like this worth?

I find that the 12 volt later ones were more sought after and brought more $$ than the 6 volt models if that helps

Thanks Tim, I'm not sure if it's 12V or 6V I have only seen pictures of it. It is a later model one by looking at the grill but I'm not sure if it's push button start or key. I am waiting on a price before I go look at it. I am just trying to get a ball park figure on it. I'd probably add it to the herd and not get rid of it being how we know the man who owns it and my wife already said she wanted to keep it, that's a plus!

Around NJ even the rough ones are getting $2,500 on the low end. 130's take big money too.
Those two command more money than even the bigger tractors.
They're a little more than a super A, which is more than a cub and at the bottom is the lowly A without hydraulics which is a tough sell at $600.

Lt Mike is right. Implements also add some value. Typically your chances are that if it is a later style (sheetmetal) AND a push button start, then it is a 12 volt model. around 1963 or so, they switched from 6 volt (pull start rod) to the 12 volt (push button start). I think (but not 100% sure) that the sheetmetal change came after the electrical change. But I don't think there are any 6 volts that had push button start from factory.

Most likely you have the later style 140 with a push button start and a 12 volt generator system (all factory original). IT IS WORTH GETTING. DON"T PASS IT UP. Heck after you put your touches on it, it'll be worth $10,000 !

It does have later sheet metal so I assume it's 12V. I'm not sure if it's key start or push button. I haven't looked at it yet, I do know and forgot to mention it has full cultivators as well. I've made an offer on it and waiting for a response.

In my country a 140 probably demands more money than any other Farmall. Very desirable. Without any implements, $2500 is the best you will do, some go for $3500. With implements, I've seen them bring $5000, especially cultivators and planters.

Well, it took me since last February but it looks like we’re going to own this 140. It’s a 1 owner and sadly the owner has passed since I last posted on this. His wife and son want to sell it and my wife wants it because she thought the world of the original owner and he did of her as well. Sadly he fell out of his wheelchair and broke his neck trying to watch his son bale hay beside their house and refused to eat and passed away about a week later. Went to see him at the hospital and the last thing he told my wife was “your beautiful “. He was 90.

I went over and looked at the tractor today, it has a full set of cultivators with the crooked bar, it has a fast hitch with the J bar, it’s has fertilizer with the hopper and also the assembly for the opposite side and the lid for the hopper and front and rear wheel weights. I made him an offer last year and they actually sold it to me for less than I offered, I didn’t even ask. I’ll be getting it in the next week to the house hopefully but our schedule is slap full right now.

That sounds like a deal right there and a good tractor. IF it has dual side dressers, then that is a pretty hard to find item and you might as well double the price on what a single side dresser is worth. Maybe not quite double, but it is worth a bit more than a single setup. The fast hitch is worth several hundred, the wheel weights.....fronts especially are a plus, and the cultivators are worth several hundred. I think you did very well!

Can't wait to see pictures.

That’s a damn sad story, sorry to hear of the old gents passing. I’m sure the both of you will do a proper restoration on that tractor. I’ve got a hunch it’ll be your wife’s though and before long you’ll be looking for a second for yourself.

I can't wait to see the progress on it. Having restored several 140s myself, I'm excited to see what Shane will do.
