I bought a Farmall A

Postby Lyndon » Wed Feb 14, 2018 12:34 am

Well I bought a Farmall A today. Its currently stored at my Nan's farm while I organise a shed for it here. It runs well but the carb needs a rebuild as petrol pours out the bowl gasket. Kind of wish it was electric start though.

Nice tractor! Doesn't look too beat up and front wheel weights too. Get those mag points filed and gapped, clean the carb and you shouldn't have to worry about electric start. But I know what you mean...

Do you see many tractors for sale around you, down under?

Thanks for sharing your pictures! :hattip:

Yes there's quite a few around still. I was wanting a super A but when I saw how straight and original this one was at a good price I snapped it up. The only part missing is the left guard (fender) due to a hydraulic unit being bolted on above the rear pto that was fighting for space.
Will be looking for a belly mower to fit to it so it can earn it's keep.

Electric start is for wimps. LOL I see it is a dual fuel, does it still have the shutters?
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Radiator shutters? I think so. There was a control rod leading to that direction, I only had the trailer for 3 hour hire so it was a mad rush to go get and then travel the 40km to stash it out of sight at the farm. We had 100kph wind that day so that made towing interesting.

So I put some new gaskets in the carb and got the A going easily but it only ran for 5 minutes before stopping. Looks like I'll have to drain the fuel and check for a blockage. Still getting used to hand cranking though.

Found the filter in the fuel bulb blocked and the starting tank valve blocked too. Cleaned out the filter and ran it off the main tank and it ran no problem. Will remove the starting tank at a later date to unblock the outlet.

That’s good news. Nice when things start working again.

Get that carb fixed or you might end up like me... searching for every part that is plastic or rubber

My sentiments exactly. Also thought about the contribution to a catastrophe like this of using a flexible fuel line instead of a steel line. Very likely that a fire extinguisher would be nowhere around.

Wow did the Barn survive? now the gasket kit is installed there is no fuel squirting out the side of the carb so hopefully I have avoided that result.

One thing that is good about this A is it hasn't done much field work and its steering is very crisp. I'm the second owner and the first owner used it as a contractor driving equipment like a hammermill. The previous owner despite being in his 90s and long retired would still go out and give the engine a run every few months to keep it free.
