If your tag has been sand blasted this won't work, but if not, and you can still feel the original raised letters and stampings you can easily bring it back to readable.
Clean and mask the tag:
Spray or paint on some black paint:
Sand lightly with 320 sandpaper:
done, not perfect, but better
