Major Newb!

Postby Craig roop » Wed May 17, 2017 11:22 pm

major newb!
Hello everyone! My name is Craig and boy do I have a lot to learn.Ive always liked machines, but never been exposed to very many tractors,or farm machinery being a city boy.
Grew up working on cars,trucks,motorcycles,etc.
Last year I rented a house from a really nice guy who loves farmall tractors, and has 3 cubs. I think they mainly suffer from non use but appear to be in good condition and stored inside.
Im here to learn and gain appreciation for the cubs and tractors in general as well as build my frienship with Keith,my landlord. We are both 58 years so we see eye to eye mostly. He came from the farm,I love old machines and enjoy working on them. Very happy to find this site and understand its THE PLACE for cubs.
Thanks so much for having me.

Today was a good day with the cub. Using the info I found here,I was able to verify static timing, clean and set the points. The starter was really draggy,so I popped it off cleaned it up and recut the comutator, reseated the brushes and lubed up the bushings. Works like a champ and spins the cub nicely even at 6 volts. The cub runs really good, However, the fuel tank is dirty so Im gonna pull it tomorrow clean and reline with redcoat. I just did a tank for my harley and made a rocker driven off one of my lathes to rock it around with some nuts, bolts chain pieces. Should be good for the cub tank too. Im liking this cub so far it was a hoot to drive. The hydraulics worked well and its belly mower cuts quite swath!

Work is progressing well on the cub. Tank is soaking, carb is clean and rebuilt. Cleaned up the generator and got it charging. The headlamps arent working and it appears the switch is the cause. It feels kinda gummy,Im going to try flushing it with a contact cleaner I used back in my mercedes restoration days. Next is a complete fluid change, and lube. I would like to flush the hydraulic system too. Then I suppose we will pull the next one out and start on it.
