1949 farmall cub
Hello all, I am looking at a 49 cub for my brother who just bought it. I'm glad there is a forum like this one.
The Cub runs good but has a clicking sound in 2nd gear, my brother has asked me to look at it as I am a mechanic.
So far I have removed shifter and looked in there. I need to find info on the trans, I see one of the gears has teeth that look milled off some.
I will do some searches and see if I can find the answer. Thanks Otis0

Parts/service/owners manuals are free download at the top of the page. Suggest checking the trans for moisture/condensation/water infiltration, flush and refill with 3.5 pints of 80-90 wt lube.

Re: 1949 farmall cub
Thanks for the welcome Bob + Stan, I will value your experience with these machines.
The tractor has serial no. 101163, I guess it is really a 1950 model. Brother was born in '49 so he may be wishing it was too.
I have found the second speed driven gear is missing a tooth, the 2/3 sliding gear has milled the tips of the teeth for 2nd also.
So I will need both of those for sure, besides whatever else I find when it's apart, are new gears still available? Bro wants new if possible.
Here are couple pics of my bro's Cub.

Re: 1949 farmall cub
I think Steiner may carry some new gears. However, when you see the prices you may opt for used (JP Tractor Salvage, sponsor at the bottom of the page). Cub Cadet gears are popular for replacement as they usually have very little wear on them. Remember that Cub trannies most always have some noise due to the way the gears are cut.

There are several forum members that sell used parts; you can post a free "WANTED" add on the VINE forum. If there is a CUBFEST held near you it might yield the parts you are looking for also. A side note: looks like this SN was in the range of the white demonstrator production in 1950.

I saw on the serial # database something about demonstrators, what does that mean, good or bad?

Re: 1949 farmall cub
Means it originally left the factory painted white. Some value that, others not. Search on here for examples and check under hood or other places for white paint. Also check Trent McPeaks data base, Raymond's too. We won't care how you restore it but would like to know if it was a demo. There are "counterfeit" demonstrators out there.

Re: 1949 farmall cub
It was a 1950 sales promotion by IH for the Cub, Super A and Super C. Sought after by some, others don't really care. They were supposed to be repainted red before selling, probably all did not. Some that did can still find traces of white paint. No difference mechanically than a regular FCUB. This is not mine, I just saved it from the forum.

Thanks for correcting my mistake, Jim. You're right on, of course.

Re: 1949 farmall cub
Thanks guys, hello mike dan and jim, this is sure friendly forum, and good info too.
I removed and disassembled the trans today, the second gear has broken tooth but the 2/3 slider looks better than I thought so maybe I will just buy the 2nd gear. The low/reverse shift fork is broken at the clamp so I want that.
A few of you mentioned condensation, the first time I removed the shifter, the oil in trans was to shift rails.! When I removed the plug above pto clutch the oil level dropped in trans 2 -3 inches, it went into rear end, must have had air trapped above input shaft bearing. Lots of oil came out when I drained it as you can figure it would. It is brown, I seems to be mostly oil to me though. I've seen water in oil, and that amount of water over full of condensation or rain would be easy enough to spot I think. Leaves me to think someone filled it way too full.
I have been alert for signs of white paint but none noticed yet.

Man!! Your brother is one lucky guy to have you around. Jumped right in there. You can post an ad in the VINE if you are looking for parts. Congrats and good luck!

Re: 1949 farmall cub
Thanks Dale I'll tell him that he's lucky
I have spotted some white paint, scratched air filter shows white under the red, there is white paint or primer under the red on trans and mid part of frame.
I have the second gear and the fork coming from JP, Sarah was a great help there.
Where is good place to buy trans bearings and not go broke doing it. All of these are just a tiny bit not perfect, still usable I believe for the job this cub will do, but to hold the trans noise to minimum just riding around the yard.
How much clearance should be for shift fork and the 2/3 gear? This has .029" - .030" there seems a bit free to me.
