I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

Thanks for the warm welcome
Thanks to all for the warm welcome. I'm amazed to hear from so many folks from all over the country - guess that's the power of the internet.
I look forward to meeting those of you in Texas and am glad to see the Aggies are well represented here too.
After my trip over to the farm this weekend, I got some additional information about my cub and a good idea about what will be involved with restoring it.
First of all, I learned that Denny was right - the engine block date indicates it is a 1955 model (the serial number plate is long gone).
Next, I found out from my Dad and Grandmother that this tractor first belonged to her Father - my Great Grandfather. Before he bought this cub, he used plow and mule for their little farm. My Grandfather bought it from him and continued using it up until about 10 years ago. It has sat up for a number of years in an open shed, so it is really showing its age. However, the engine, transmission and electrical system all seem to be in working condition. I want to do some initial flushing of the fuel tank and other cleaning before I crank it up though. The front wheels are dry-rotted, so I'll be replacing them first so it can roll without tearing up the rims.
Also, I learned that most of the implements are still around the place and are in decent condition.
Here are a few pictures from the weekend including one of me and my two girls who seem to dearly love climbing on the tractor like I did when I was their age.
Thanks to Rudi for the post on the resources available through this website and to everyone for their kind words.

It looks like you're gonna have some competition for seat time before too long!

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Awesome, welcome aboard! Those front tires look like mine did when I hauled Black Cat back from Kansas. This board has been invaluable to me in my progress so far with the Cub, and I'm sure you'll find it to be the same. Glad to see another Cub that's been handed down through the generations, too.

your cub looks to be in great shape. there has been cubs that looked way worse that look really awesome now. maybe podge from kentucy will post a before and after of his tractor christine. i know those kids are gonna love riding on that cub as much as you did. i know i loved it as a kid and i'm like you lucky enough to have my grandfathers tractor. which makes this the rarest cub out there (priceless).
