Newbie member here...but long history with IH!

Postby Scubuster » Thu Sep 20, 2007 6:48 am

Hi,

Just a quick word about me and why I'm here.

Where do I start...I have IH in my blood..my Father was a Zone Sales Manager for IH in Australia for several years, before being offered his own dealership, which he had from about 1968 to 2006. All I knew as a child was IH - tractors, ag equipment and trucks and ERTL diecast toys of course!

After almost 40 years as an IH dealer, my Father sold his business and retired, he had built up so much goodwill in his dealership that the new owners wanted to, and still do, trade under his name! Dad was agreat advocate of IH, and was devastated when the break-up of the company occured, the last straw being when the Australian truck business was sold off to IVECO/FIAT (Fix It Again Tony!).

Early this year, at the age of 67, my Father died from a very sudden and aggressive illness, and I miss him dearly.

To cut a long story short, I am carrying on his IH legacy, initially with the restoration of his own tractor, an AWD-7, which was made in the IH factory in Geelong, Australia. An AWD7 is very similar to a W6 for those not familiar with the model - and you probably wouldn't be, it was an Australian model only, but obviously based upon it's US cousins.

Anyways, in researching for the AWD-7 restoration I have stumbled upon this site, and a tractor that I was only vaguely familiar of - the Cub. Cubs were never imported here to my knowledge, pity!

The Cub bug has bitten me!

My goal is to now source a Cub(s) (and Cub Cadet) and bring it (them) back to Australia in the near future, to be part of my IH collection - AWD-7 + Cub/s!

Having looked at the various years and models, and all of them are great tractors, however I am finding myself drawn to the late 50's Cub Lo-boys, and very early (Original thru 100 model) Cadets.

Given that the Cubs were never sold here, I figure my best chance is to try and obtain a Cub (and Cadet) in restored condition, as access to parts will be nil here in Australia. One that just required painting (and other cosmetics) to bring back to as new condition would also be OK.

So my question for you guys is: Where would I start? That is, where would I begin my search for a tractor/s, and given I find one that's not restored, who would I go to in the USA to get a proper restoration done?

I am contemplating a visit to the US for this purpose, but would obviously need to know where I should be going, and who I should be seeing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ian - welcome to farmallcub.com! It is great to hear about your IH history. If I may suggest, start your search with a wanted ad right here in our forum. Many members have done excellent restorations and we see a fair share of restored tractors offered for sale.

Ian, welcome to the Forum from "Down Under" Mate :!: Pretty certain we have a "few" members from Australia, I'm sure Rudi will mention that when he does his formal welcome with you.

What part of Aussie are you from? I spent some time there in Alice Springs at the satellite complex, beautiful countryside by the way.

If you plan on making a trip to the states, be sure to check the announcements page for the listing of Cub gatherings so you can make an attempt to attend one.

Hope to see more of you on the Forum, G'Day

I'm originally from Albany in Western Australia, but now live in Canberra, our Capital. We share a common work history - I have also done some work at PG, and the one down the road!

Cheers.

Ian, Small world :!: I'm still in the "Game" these days, but not in the uniform any longer, just as a Govt. Contractor.

Real small world, there's at least two more on the Forum with similar backgrounds; Rudi & Cecil. Rudi served with the Canuk's & Cecil was USN.

Once again, welcome and we hope you find you're Cub.

Ian, did a quick search thru some of the archives, and I find one member (has not posted in awhile) from Australia

Leigh Cole: http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... =australia

And there are at least two members from New Zealand as well.

Silver Fern: http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... =australia

W6Nz: http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... ght=#74733

You might attempt to make contact with these folks, as they are a quite a bit closer than those of us here, maybe they would have a line on a Cub closer to you?

I've had the chance to talk with Cecil in person, Rudi & I have only had the chance to "Chat" online and via emails. Hope to get the chance to chat with Rudi in person in the future though.

welcome Ian. I am one of the "originals" on this forum and can safely say you will not find a better bunch of people anywhere. Australia is one of the countries I would dearly love to visit someday, but unfortunately I probably will never get too.

Ian:

First, Image to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met :!: :D

G'day mate :!: :D Wow.. lookie dat.. another member of the CanUKUS-AU/NZ commint community... welcome, welcome welcome. Pretty soon we can have our own Spook Cub Club :!: Here is a little story that you may find interesting. One of my postings was to CFS Alert (did 2 tours).. which is the very northern most tip of Ellesmere Island and is the most northerly permanently inhabited place on earth. In 1977 whilst I was running phone patch traffic on HF from Alert to other parts of Canada and occasionally the US such as California, VE8RCS had a call from KC4AAA - Scott Base Antarctica. Apparently we were the only milstat that they could get hold of and had emerg traffic for the meds in San Diego. Since I could hear San Diego (Imperial Beach if I remember), and KC4AAA, we ran the phone patch. Now talk about long path for a phone call. San Diego to the North Pole to the South Pole and back via the North Pole to San Diego... :!: Cool..

There are a few members from the land of the Southern Cross that either have or are getting Cubs/Cub Cadets. There is a fair following of them. As for whether or not they were exported to Australia, has been a bit of curiosity for me for a while. Given the fact the amount of US and Canadian material that flowed to Australia and NZ after WW2 as part of the Marshall Plan rebuilding of RimPAC and Japan, it would not surprise me much if a number of Cubs did make it to the land down under. They would be scarce I imagine. I don't think that if you are willing to ship a Cub and a Cub Cadet or two, that you wouldn't consider shipping a parts cub or a pallet of the large castings as replacements on a project tractor. I know that one of our sponsors.. Tom and Lynn Maise at TM Tractor Parts ships Cub stuff all over the world. I imagine small stuff by air, and large stuff by slow boat to China..

Anyways.. welcome to the family. I thoroughly enjoyed your introduction and look forward to following your restoration efforts on your Dad's AWD-7 and others. Please do keep us up to date.

I hope some of the resources available here as well as those on the server below might be of some help to you. I am adding other Letter Series Tractors as I get the manuals, but it will not be as comprehensive as the Cub stuff of course.

The Welcome Wagon is a relatively brief introduction to the information that is currently available on Cub tractors, and answers many of the common questions new members ask right of the bat. Although it is a bit overwhelming  , it has been designed to actually be copied to a Word Processor such as Microsoft Word (which preserves the active links), and saved to your desktop for easy reference at a later date or when you have a bit more time to read all the information contained in the links below. Please do so, enjoy and I hope this will be a useful aid in learning more about your New Cub Tractor :!: :D

Filling out your Image Profile is a real help. It just needs to be - State,City, County, a lot less than what is available in your local phone book. Knowing where you are will help in members offering to come help, when you are looking for parts - the area that would be useful to you etc., Also our CubFests, Mini-Fests or a simple KaffeeKlatsch/get together over coffee and a doughnut etc., to help each other benefits. Just a thought :!:

Ok, so here is the spiel Image:

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub. One of the other projects we have been working on and it will be a continuing effort is the The Cub Book of Knowledge. This the the place to go to get all the quick links to some very good articles written by many members of the forum on solving some of the problems we encounter as we repair, maintain and up-grade our Cubs. Keep looking for this to grow.

Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These pages are intended to complement our Official FarmallCub.com Website Sponsors:I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better if you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's :?: . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

Oh, and while the program still lasts.. you might want to check the Announcement: Navistar Free Gas Cap Offer - On-Line Form thread at the top of the Cub Forum and send away for the new style safety cap before that program runs out as well. The program has been extended and no new definite end-date has been announced at this point. It is an extension only and may end rather quickly depending on available stocks. Please do take advantage of this offer and get the new safety caps  :!:

I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, Image to the Cub FamilyImage :D

The name of our place is OUTBACK Ranch. Yes because of my love for Australia ehich I have had since I was little. My birthmark looks like Australia.
Anyway glad to hear from Downunder. Bob

Ian.
Welcome to the forum as the others have said not a better bunch of floks anywhere on the web :!:
Speaking of Australia I did some work for ABC several years ago in Darwin and Sydney. We put in some Satcom antennas and the uplink equipment. Had a great time in Darwin, checked out the saltwater crock's and took in a rodeo. Really was interested in those roadtrains you guys have down there, very impressive!
Best of luck with your search for the cubs and cadets, I'm sure you will get some leads from this forum.

Ron
I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.
