Hi, from Whidbey Island Wa.
My name is Mel, I've owned my 1949 CUB for about a year now, and still love it. The owner before me had the CUB for 10 years. He bought it when he was still in High School using it on the family farm.
The reason I bought the tractor was the same reason ,to use on the family farm.
I only have one problem, that when I work it hard I have a hard time restarting it. Know I have some knowlege of engines and I would say that it has an intake problem, like a blown intake gasket, a cracked intake manifold or intake valves that don't close.
The thing is this little guy has plenty of power until it warms up. Also when it comes under a load and I give it more juice it will quit and I either have to pull it or wait about an hour for it to cool down and it will start right up.
I've been reading the post here for some time and I think the help you all give one another is great. I know it's sure kept a lot of people from spending lots of money on advise, when they could be spending it on their
CUBS.

Welcome aboard Mel! On your power problem - don't overlook a failing coil (especially if you are still running a magneto ignition) as a possible source of your problems. When your tractor is hot or hard to start, pull a plug wire and check to see if the spark is still hot. It should throw a bright blue arc about 1/2" long.

Hello Another member from Whidbey Island.. excellent. Yup, Whidbey is pretty famous in some circles... most IOTA and USIA, but others as well.

Oh just a note, the manual server is down for a few days.. I think my guru is on holiday.. makes sense, proper time frame so some of the links below will appear broken, but as soon as the server is back up the manuals and stuff will reappear.

The other stuff is available though as it is linked to other resources not physically on my server.

Yup, agree with BD.. my 48 does the same thing occassionally. Looks like a coil problem to me. If it is, then you will have to determine if your coil is actually the one embedded in the mag itself or if it is an external one. If it is an external one, then a quick fix is to get a replacement from NAPA.. that is usually IC-10 6/12 volt coil. 6 volt = no external resistor.. 12 volts applications require an external. I am doing both at the moment.. that is why it is at the top of me head.

Also, if you have an internal and have a few days, you may want to check with Jon Sommerville aka MagMan on the forums here. He speciallizes in rebuilding mags and does a great job. He can get the replacement coils, at times cheaper than others.. and does great work. A core is usually required. I have one of his coils, and it is super.

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub. One of the other projects we have been working on and it will be a continuing effort is the How To Work on Your Cub - Maintenance Tips and Techniques. This the the place to go to get all the quick links to some very good articles written by many members of the forum on solving some of the problems we encounter as we repair, maintain and up-grade our Cubs. Keep looking for this to grow.


Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better if you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

Thanks for the advice, I didn't think about the coil, but I'll sure give it a shot. this little '49 is still all stock as far as I can tell. It has an external
coil so it won't be hard to change out ,but I'll give the spark plug wire a try first.
The only other problem I have are dim lights, I know this could be anything from a bad ground to bad bulbs. I only run the cub during the days so this hasn't been a big priority.
