Im reading that I need to make two posts for access to some good documentation. One can be an introduction. Hoping that starting a new topic in this area is the way to do this?

'Just bought a Cub. I've always admired the design, and a small tractor will be easier for some of the small work on my place. 'Not sure of the year, because the data plate is very worn. Guessing early 50's. PO put an alternator on it, so I'm guessing that it's 12V now. 'Still has a magneto, and no coil. 'Loong forward to learning ore about it, and this forum looks like a great resource. Cheers. -Wallie

Welcome to the forum. One more post and you can access/download from the manuals folder located at the Quick links tab, top left corner of this page. Date, Year of mfg can be closely approximated by checking the casting codes on the major castings. Stan

Yes, this is the place to post an introduction.
Post questions you have on the Farmall Cub part of the website.
The serial number is stamped in the serial number plate. You could try using a good light, and getting up close to the plate to see it. Move the light slowly in different angles, and you might see the number.
There could also be an 1800 stamped in the plate, that is the maximum engine RPM.

Still has a magneto, and no coil.

The Cub magneto has a coil under the cover on top of it, that the spark plug wire is plugged into.

There are casting date codes on the larger castings on Cubs. They tell the date when the parts were made. They use a letter for the year.

The info below shows where the codes are.
The code on the clutch housing is usually partly behind the clutch pedal.
The code on the last part on the page, the steering gear housing, usually can't be seen with the tractor assembled.

Hi,
If the Cub has been sitting, you should prime the engine oil pump before starting the engine.
The pump can lose it's prime sitting, and might not suck oil up from the oil pan without priming it.
Below is a post I wrote on with info about priming the oil pump.

I wrote above that the 1800 on the serial number plate is the maximum engine RPM, usually that is right, but I guess there is one Cub that is serial number 1800.
If the words on the plate are faded away, or the plate has been painted over, you can't read the words on it.
Below are listings for new plates from TM Tractor Parts. You can see the position the numbers would be in.
There were 3 different plates used through the years Cubs were made, with the numbers in different places. I posted the listings so you can see where the numbers would be on the plates. The new plates have no model name, or numbers.
