New guy

Postby TimLong » Tue Sep 17, 2019 8:29 pm

I just bought a 1953 Cub and came across this forum. I look forward to gaining knowledge on refurbishing it. I would say restoring it but I dont think this on will ever make it back to 100 % original.

Hi,
The Cub owner's manual will help you learn about maintenance that the Cub needs.

Below is the 1950 Cub owner's manual. The experts on here recommend people read it. It has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. There is a table of contents on page 1.
It shows how Cubs originally looked in it.
The lube section begins on page 14. Changing the trans and final drive oils are on pages 20 and 21.
Cleaning the air cleaner is on pages 28, and 29.

Part of the electrical system is different on a 1953 Cub, than the 1950 Cub had, like is shown in the manual above. The system like a 1953 Cub originally had is shown in the 1955 Cub owner's manual.

Below is the 1955 Cub owner's manual. The Battery Ignition unit and electrical system info begins on page 31.

I would check or change all the oils, before using the Cub, using a Cub with low oil in a gear housing can damage the parts in it.
There are 3 separate gear housings in the rear area of a Cub, with 3 separate oil levels to check, the transmission, and 2 final drives.
The transmission can get water in it from rain, or condensation in it over time.
People say on here that it commonly happens.

The trans oil filler plug is to the rear of the shifter.
The trans oil level plug is low on the left side of the trans.
The trans oil drain plug is at the bottom of the trans, visible from under the platform.

The trans holds 3 1/2 Pints of oil, when filled to the oil level plug hole.
A 1953 Cub uses 90 wt, or 80W 90 gear oil in the trans, and final drives.
The manual shows how to check and change all the oils. :)

If you REALLY want to learn a lot about your "new" cub, try to attend a CUBFEST. There will be one in Harrison, Ohio, in October, and then a well-attended one and the first of 2020 in February in Sneads, Florida. It's a chence to either work on your own tractor, component (carb, touch control, etc) or help others with theirs. You will meet some friendly, knowledgeable forum folks, eat some good food, and hear some tall tales! I generally drive 8-12 hours for these events...and they are worth it! There are a few more this year, so check out the schedule:
