Farmall Cub

These are tractors that live in my barn.

Both photos, right to left:
1949 Farmall Cub - no volt (currently); hand crank only; the first tractor to take up residence out here
1945 Farmall A - returned to 6v; runs on gasoline or kerosene; Marvel-Schebler carburetor; American Bosch magneto
1947 Farmall A - suffered a catastrophic engine failure, replaced with a C-123 engine (donated from a Super C)
1950 John Deere M - I am a Farmall man, but there's just something about that 2-cylinder

I like the M too , as a youngster I used to ride the hitch of a JD 40 as it pulled an IH manure spreader , it was fun and dumb glad I never fell off,

I think the M and 40 are the same

That Cub and '45 A are sharp tractors! I like the M Deere's as well. A few years back I restored a 430W, though slightly bigger, all those Dubuque tractors are on the same platform...

The Cub was in serious need of an engine overhaul and a clutch when I acquired it, and had the rusted-out remains of a Woods mower under it, but it would still crank and (barely) run. I found a CUB-22 mower for sale in Texas, and drove to get it over a weekend. I managed to keep it running for a while, but in mod-2005 the engine finally gave up; the block was too far gone to rebuild, so a stripped donor was located. Took me until May of 2006 to locate all the necessary parts and pieces to finally get it back together.

The '45 A was found, quietly neglected, at the back of a farm supply. It had been sitting uncranked for at least two years when I happened upon it, but the engine would turn with the crank handle. I put fresh gas in the tank and hooked up the jumper cables (it had been crudely converted to 12v), then pushed the starter rod. T-u-r-n and t-u-r-n and t-u-r-n; t-u-r-n and t-u-r-n and t-u-r-n; t-u-r-n and t-u-r-n and t-u-r-n; t-u-r-n and POP!-POP!-cough; t-u-r-n and POP!-POP!-cough. On the next push of the rod a cloud of black boiled out the exhaust, then it fired and was running like a sewing machine. That was in 2001, and I have never seen the inside of the carburetor, and have had the cover off the magneto only once - and even then it was only to clean oxidation off the points. I returned this one to 6v, and repaired the butchered hand lift - someone had rigged up a hydraulic system with a power-steering pump and a goofy looking cylinder, and had taken a cutting torch to the operating levers. Fortunately, I was able to find the parts needed for the lift from the same place in Texas that the Cub's No.22 Mower had come from.

The '47 A was received as payment on a loan to a friend. I actually wasn't expecting ANY payment from him (the Farmall was the most valuable thing he owned) and tried to refuse the tractor, but he insisted. It, too, was converted to 12v and currently remains so. And its engine was replaced at some point with one from a Super C.

The John Deere M (a 1950) was sitting in the middle of a pasture the first time I saw it, looking pretty much like it does in the pictures - except it had nothing to keep rain out of the exhaust, the hydraulic unit was partially disassembled and open to the elements, and the seat frame was about 10 feet away and had become part of the structure of a fire-ant mound. I had to have it; I had to save it. The engine on this one was stuck, but a week-long soaking with penetrating oil and I was able to get it to turn. Meanwhile, I was engaged with reassembling the hydraulic unit, cleaning the seat frame, and clearing several years of rust out of the carburetor. Once that had been accomplished, then came the moment of truth. New gas in the tank; new oil and filter; new plugs, wires, distributor cap, points and condenser - it took quite a few turns of the engine, but it at long last cleared its lungs by coughing out some particularly nasty looking crud, and then it roared to life. To this day I have not done anything internally to the engine. The "Correctness Police" will probably notice the yellow stripe down the side of the hood, which I freely admit should not be there. When I got it home and running I kept looking at it and thinking "That's just entirely too much green".
