1947 circle Cub S.N. 535

Postby rjfcsa » Tue Mar 04, 2014 12:35 pm

I found a couple photos of the early Circle Cub I picked up. Not real pretty but it is all original. The S.N. is 535 the engine S.N. is 535 and the mag S.N. is 567. has the fine wire grill. The rear rims are an odd narrow 5" rim, so it makes the rear tire look small and skinny. I had it at the Rantoul half century of progress show, and had several people tell me to just leave it alone and not repaint it. So for now that is probably what I am going to do. When it gets better weather I need to take some more pics.
Thanks for looking,
Russel

Russel,

I agree, leave it original, as the saying goes.. it’s only original once! It’s a great piece of working history, good to see it is with someone who appreciates it.

Thanks for sharing,
David

Love it. I agree I wouldn't change a thing. Use it, show it and enjoy it.

Well here's kind of a short story about this cub.
I got this last year Feb.? Mar? Well I wasn't looking for another cub but my dad was surfing Craig's list and he spotted this old cub. I was on the grand rapids craig's list and he probably would not have looked at it twice but the guy had the S.N. in the add, and my dad could not hardly believe it. He called him up and he was sure that was the right S.N. He had bought it off a neighbor family, when the original owner, his friend, has passed, and he parked it in his shed and never really used it for anything for approx. 10 years. Hears kind of the kicker he had, had it listed for I am thinking 2 weeks. If I remember correctly he was asking $2500 then down to $1900 or so, and we told him we were coming and got him down on the phone to $1500. I did not want to commit 100% to buying it until I could see it. Well got there and looked it over and it was all right S.N. wise, not the prettiest but all original. It had laid over on its left side at one time, muffler pipe bent, hood and tank virtually unhurt, slight bend around exhaust hole. Steering column bent, radiator looked a little sprung. It ran for a little bit, long enough to load, fuel problem. Well it came with a manual lift, one bottom plow, has two draw bars mounted on it, and a front blade but it might be missing a bracket or two. Well being the tight wad I am I negotiated some more, but he would not budge much but I got it bought for $1400 and we headed home. This summer I worked on it some to get it going for the Rantoul show. I clean out the tank just some stuff in the bottom real clean tank. I used some straps and a comealong to a post on the steering column and got it pulled back closeish it steers better now, tie rods were even in real good shape. I got the radiator carefully pulled back but I will need to replace it as it is seeping. The manifold was not busted, I don't know how but I was able to get the pipe out and replaced it. It even charges. So in a longish nutshell there it is.
thanks,
Russel Foster
