Re: Battery Cable questions
I am with Dale....making it is cheaper and easy and from what I have read, a better connection than crimping. Make sure you put the shrink tubing on the cable before.

Re: Battery Cable questions
I got one made at NAPA today. Ends crimped on with heat shrink. New cables will be a summertime project. I'll make up a set for a spare.

Re: Battery Cable questions
Amazing you should post about battery cables. I had my starter at the Auto Electric shop just last week. The owner side I needed larger cables for to operate appropriately for my 6v system. Reached TM, eBay, Rudy’s cable making post and Messick’s. Found Cable should be 2 guage and length 87”. I went to and RV shop to have it made but the recommending a NAPA store to make the cables for me. So 76.00 later at my local NAPA store I have new cables. All they need now is heat shrink tubing.

Re: Battery Cable questions
Why not go to the welding shop and get them to put the ends on for you? They do it for welders all the time. That way you don't have to purchase the tools and you get the best cable.
To God be the Glory!

Re: Battery Cable questions
Making cables is easy to do. My previous one was corroded and had a garden hose for insulation.
Since my Cub is 6 volt, I used 1/0 welding cable which I had around. The starter terminal I bought at Napa, the angled negative battery terminal at Granger. I used propane torch to solder and used heat shrink tubing. I bought a cable cutter from Harbor Freight for $6
For your 12 volt Cub the AWG 4 should be fine. The resistance drop for with either is 0.002 Ohms/ft. and the cable is just 6-7 feet long. The AWG 4 is rated at 60 amps.
As far as the correct length, it really depends on how you route your cable. On mine it's looped vertically above the starter. You can also run the cable past the oil filter which is shorter. I routed mine before cutting the cable.
