Replacement for spring on snow plow?

Postby DickB » Sat Mar 03, 2018 8:07 am

There's a spring that's underneath the snow plow mechanism that is in front of the Cub's front wheels. The spring is just behind the plow and seems to hold the plow upright as well as aid in guiding the plow to a bit more height when the hydraulics wants the plow at maximum height. My spring seems to be kaput...for years it was getting less round because it glides along the ground and scrapes, so by now it must be in pieces--can't tell right now with all the ice and heavy snow all over it. Where to go...TM parts?...for a replacement spring? I vaguely recall someone mentioning that the seat spring will work as a replacement. True?

Plowed yesterday and my plow would hardly elevate. Did a lot of scraping of the ground.

Thanks for guidance on this.

That spring is different than the seat spring. The upright spring that attaches to the strap is the one that is the same as the seat.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

If your spring is dragging on the ground, something is definitely off. Can you post a few pictures of your plow? Are the pins between the plow frame and the face of the blade in the center holes (like the one pictured)?

The spring is there to allow the plow to fold forward slightly in the event that it hits an obstruction. It has nothing to do with lifting height of the blade, unless the spring is broken, then the plow face will flop forward.

This spring is NOT the same as the one from the seat post. The 54A leveling and grader blade has a spring on the A-frame (which is interchangeable with the seat post spring) as well as a lower spring. If forum members aren't able to help you out, you should be able to get a spring from an industrial supplier like McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com). You'll need to measure the outside diameter, inside diameter, diameter of the 'wire', and uncompressed length to find a similar one.

My Cub came with a blade where that spring has been dragged and looks like a stack of curly fries. If someone measures a good spring please post the results.
