Wiring ideas for lawn sprayer

Postby ShawnAgne » Sat Mar 03, 2018 5:50 am

Getting a NorthStar lawn sprayer with an 12V pump (I'm converted to 12V) and was wanting some ideas on how to hook it up electrically. Looks like it comes with battery clamps but wanting to do something a little more professional so I don't have to take off the battery cover. Any suggestions?

I have a 12 volt DC herbicide sprayer and a 12 volt DC water pump. Both have alligator clips to attach to the battery. Both have an inline on/off switch so that I can control when they operate. Actually the alligator clips are fast, easy to use.

I rummaged through my electrical wire junk box and electrical connector box, found a switch, alligator clips, enough cable, heat shrink, etc., to wire up the 12 volt DC water pump.

Take a long look at the tractor you are planning to use with the sprayer. Some place on the tractor there will be an easy location to acquire the 12 volts. Normal location would be the terminal on the top of the starter if the tractor doesn't use a solenoid to energize the starter.

Skid steer that is seldom used, I wired the battery to snap in/snap out 12 volt terminal. Reason I did this is that the battery is under the operator's seat. Have to remove the seat to get to the battery terminals. The idea here is that when I operate the generator sets to power the shop, skid steer battery gets charged.

Edit. Since the sprayer is going to be used once or twice a year. Keep it simple.
I have an excuse. CRS.

You may want to incorporate a fuse or circuit breaker in the system.

To make it look nice, I suggest this setup. We use it on our feed mixer tractor to connect the electronic scales to the tractor. A good auto parts store should have them. No alligator clips to pop off or short out, or wire running every which-a-way.

In order to attach my battery trickle chargers, I installed these (included) pigtails. The quick disconnect sticks out where the battery cable exits the battery box, where it is available but out of the way. The cap keeps dirt and mud daubers out of it! If you added the matching half to your pump, it would be an easy, neat way to power it.

Thanks everyone for the reply. I like the idea Dale showed, that is simple and not force me to drill and mount anything on the tractor. I'll post pics when I get the stuff and get it hooked up.

Shawn,

Dale's idea is great, however, you need a switch in the line to control the power. My suggestion is to run wires from the battery (as Dale suggested) to a simple toggle switch and from the toggle switch, a simple plug in connector to the pump. Simple, effective, and inexpensive.

I believe there is a toggle switch on the sprayer, but if there isn't I will add one.

Shawn, I have a similar setup as Dale. The male/female plug is wired to plus battery post and to ground. Not only can it be used for your pump. It also is used for battery or trickle charger, safety amber flashing light or any other 12 volt application. Removing the battery cover is a pain.
Even though I do have an inline switch, there is really no need with the pumps that I have used. The pump has a built-in switch that shuts off power to pump when not spraying to prevent overload. Probably pressure regulated, but I am not certain of that.
Hope this helps.

Made up one similar to BigHoss' picture from my electrical junk box for the skid steer. Works great. Back the skid steer into it's parking spot, plug in the battery charger.

Had I known that Walmart had the connectors I could have saved myself some time and perhaps a bit of money.

I did about the same as Dale for battery maintainers, but only for my natively 12-volt tractors. The maintainer clips can be easily attached at the starter if you have the original style 6-volt starter. The 12-volt systems don't have an easily reached hot spot. If I wanted power while running the tractor, I would attach a pigtail and not use alligator clips even on a 6-volt system due to the inconvenience/risk of them popping loose.

I attached the pigtail that came with the maintainer to the battery side of the ammeter and the ground to a fuel tank mount bolt. The pigtail tucks up on top of the Touch-Control when not needed. If my intention was to power an accessory, I probably would have connected to the other side of the ammeter.

By the way, you can get the pigtail for about $6, or get another maintainer with an included pigtail for a little over $20. The maintainer may be on the shelf in your local Wal-Mart. I'd spend the extra money and get another maintainer!

I put a fuse and switch in line with a cigarette lighter socket (easily pulls out in case the implement becomes disconnected from tractor).
I wish I had used one of these wireless remote switches with a pigtail connector shown in prior post.
