Square head plug wrench

Postby staninlowerAL » Mon Jan 08, 2018 7:59 pm

Looking for info/ideas for a 3/8 square head pipe plug wrench that will fit all 4 sides of the plug. Is there anything that is factory made or will this be a shop made tool? Needs to be robust enough to remove the radiator bolster drain plug. Thanks.

When you say fits all sides means a box end wrench, then I've seen them on lathes with a lantern style toolholder. You can look around at flea markets and that kind of thing for those. If not there, it's easy enough to punch a hole through a good stout piece of barstock

3/8" socket set extension if you are talking about a recessed 3/8" hole.

There are 3/8" square sockets available. Check the internet, local auto parts stores, machine tools supply stores.

Edit: Your local hardware store may be able to obtain one.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thanks for the responses. I'll check with the auto parts store first, it's the most convenient place. I want to avoid rounding the square head off if at all possible. Probably has not been removed in 70 years.

Stan, they make those and are pretty cheap, just look up square sockets, pretty sure the company "GREY" makes them, I have full set of them from 5/32 to 1", or look them up on ebay, have seen old time socket sets with those on there

Got these 8 point sockets at Sears years ago. They work pretty good.

I have the Craftman's like Shane pictured, they do pretty well. I also have some smaller (1/4", 3/8" and such) Mac square sockets. that are even better.

International made a 3 piece socket set for the square plugs on all the tractors. There was a set for sale on the Facebook Free Farmall Auction page not long ago.

Pawn shops are a good place to find the square (8 pointed) sockets. Usually cheap in a box of sockets. You may have to sort them out

Always seen these but never used one. They kind of look like a gimmick, but might suit your purpose. I can imagine this would be a handy tool to put entirely too much force on small needle valves, etc. and break them with efficiency.

Had one once. Real heavy torque on the nut or bolt head and the bars inside the socket bent. Basically worthless.

Ditto. Pretty much junk.
