Countershaft bearing replacement
Rear bearing is out on my 48s counter shaft. Anyone got a list of parts needed when replacing this bearing? I know alot has to come apart to get to it.

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
Just replaced all of them on Rocky. TM supplied everything needed, quickly. They were all easy to install... after all the hard work getting the old one's out!
At a minimum you will need,
http://www.tmtractor.com/new/tr/157fp.htm
http://www.tmtractor.com/new/tr/553fp.htm
and maybe a new o ring.
Remove finals, PTO, retainers, pinion gear then split transmission/torque tube and remove front bearing cap, shims and bearing. Remove counter-shaft from rear of differential while depositing the gears into the bottom of transmission, then knock out the bearing. FUN!
FYI...I had to remove a shim or two to get the correct gear mesh after installing the new bearing.

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
Does the bell housing have to be split from the engine? Or just take the tranny off the bell housing?

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
You should be able to pull the transmission/diff housing away from the torque tube, in a straight line so as not to bind the drive shaft into the throw out bearing.
You only need to pull it apart far enough to get the lower bearing cap and castle nut off.
Yes, they are proud of that bearing!

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
So I would need to be able to move the front of the tractor with the rear jacked up solid then to be able to avoid taking torque tube off the engine?

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
Hi,
Some of the guys have made stands with small wheels that bolt onto the implement mounting pads on the clutch housing, this makes it easier to split the Cub.
Here is a post showing some, it is in the How To Forum.

Below are pages from the Cub parts manual showing the transmission, and the parts in it.

Below is the Cub service manual. I would read the transmission section.
Two sections are missing from the manual.

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
About 2 years ago I replaced this bearing during a transmission rebuild. I took the old beating to my local NAPA store and they cross referenced it to another brand bearing and it was about $55.00. The new bearing hasn’t given me any problems. When the NAPA guy looked up the part he asked me what kind of Porsche I was working on. He said that his book showed that it fit some model Porsche but I don’t remember which one. Maybe that explains the price.

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
Yeah that could explain the price for sure. According to the service manuals it shows to split from torque tube before removing finals and internals etc. Easier to do that in reverse?

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
If you have a good way to secure the whole tractor I think it’s easier to take the finals off first then remove the transmission. The tranny is easier to handle that way. No need to remove the torque tube unless your putting a clutch in. If you haven’t done it nows the time to put all the seals in the transmission.

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
I have never tore into this one. With the finals and axle tube off, can I handle the tranny by hand?

Re: Countershaft bearing replacement
I started a little taking the tractor apart today. The bolts on the back of the floor pan was rusted bad enough I didn't try to take them out. Instead I decided to take the axle tube off with the floor pan on. Right now I'm down to getting the rod out that is for the left brake. It's not totally froze up but lots of UUUMMMMffffff to make it move. Best way to get it out the left side of the torque tube so I can get it out of the pan?
