Top Radiator hose

Postby Terry C » Wed Jan 03, 2018 12:53 am

Hello all,
Can the top radiator hose be replaced without unbolting the water outlet elbow?
Or should I order a new gasket for the elbow before I start this project?

Thanks in advance
Terry

A new hose should be flexible enough to install without removing the water outlet. I usually make small gaskets like this one from gasket stock material.

I've done it without removing the elbow, but it's pain. If you do remove the elbow just go to any auto parts store and buy a sheet of gasket material. It's very easy to make your own gasket and you'll have material left over to make more in the future.

Edit: Stan beat me to it. I gotta get my thumbs moving faster in this cold.

:Dito:I frequently wipe a thin layer of silicone gasket material inside the new hose. It makes it slide easier, and also helps it seal on the rough material of the cast elbow.

Soapy water works for sliding rubber on to metal as well.

Nah, it's not leaking oil. It's just marking it's territory.

Got it changed last nite. Was -2 deg in the shed.
Wouldn’t have done it in the cold but didn’t want the pets
to drink any dripping on the floor.
Thanks for the help fellas
