Don't forget to prime the oil pump before that first attempted start.

Thanks Don, I have primed it, and cranked it over with no plugs several times, I will prime it again before I try to start it once I get the carb back on. I sprayed PB Blaster on top the pistons to free up any sticking rings, Do you have any other suggestions for the first start?

Make sure your battery is fully charged. And remember, patience is a virtue. :D

Well it was not to be today!

The Cub is back together, clean oil, clean oil in air cleaner, primed oil pump. fresh gas, rebuilt carb, cleaned strainer and new screen, new fuel line, new plugs, Everything I thought I needed to start, but it was -2 degrees and even with the propane torpedo heater it was only 18 in the barn.

I cranked her through on the hand crank several times and tried some ether. It fired a few but I could not get a start. Tomorrow I will build a cardboard housing around the engine and warm it up completely before trying to start her. the impulse coupling is snapping correctly and I was getting a spark on each snap so I think ignition is okay.

I am concerned about compression, I have not checked it but it seemed low, I squirted some PB blaster into the the cylinder and it soon it was blowing my finger off the plug hole when cranked. The engine has not been run it 5+ years and I was concerned about rings, etc...

I will check again tomorrow before trying again. Maybe I need to just wait for warmer temps to get her going the first time. Then I can try to break the rings loose with Seafoam or something.

I was watching some Youtube videos this weekend of guys finding tractors that had sat for decades and some new gas and away they go, no such luck for me I guess.

You may end up needing to pull it to get it started.
