2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Hi Guys,
Newbie here, so bear with me if this is a silly question. I'm looking for a new set of original looking plug wires for my '59 Cub and only find the repop older cloth covered wires and newer silicone rubber wires with a covered spark plug end terminal. The original wires on my Cub are a smooth black rubber (no fabric) with no boot on the 90 degree end that attaches to the plug. I know they're the original wires because my Cub is an original paint, unrestored girl and the wires have red paint on them.....and I also see the exact same wires on the same era used Farmall distributors folks are selling on eBay. I can post a pic if folks don't know what I'm talking about. Does anyone make these 2nd gen Cub wires? Or are there any aftermarket black rubber wires with an uncovered 90 degree terminal on the plug end that looks like the original?
thanks,
bob

TM Tractor under the links directory here on the forum. Or just google them. And the braided was the original, unless you have a later model cub

Re: 2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Hi Guys,
Yup..........I have a set of those TM wires......they're rubber with a cloth braid covered in a shellac of some sort. These are what I call First Gen Cub wires. Second Gen (by my definition) is when the HP went up a notch, the carb to manifold bolts became threaded, plug wires lost the cloth cover, etc. My original wires are a smooth black rubber with no cloth coating. I'll post a pic of what I'm looking for when I get in later.........got to change the horses water before it freezes again!
thanks for your replies!

To the best of my knowledge, studs were always used with the IH carbs. A 1/4-20 thread in the carb, a 1/4-28 thread that took the nut on top.
Here's the other set that TM sells:

If you don't find what you want at TM Tractor Parts, try The Brillman Company.

Re: 2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Hi Bob,
The last few years of red Cubs didn't use studs to secure the carb to the manifold, they used bolts. The manifold has unthreaded holes that the bolts go thru from the top and thread into the carb body, which is threaded. The carb seems to be identical otherwise to the earlier version. I've never looked up the PNs, but they should be different for the early and late manifolds as well. There were other subtle differences too.......I just don't remember them anymore.
Regards,
bob

Re: 2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Bob......that other set from TM might work, I'd just have to pull a boot to see what the 90 degree terminal looks like.
Don......thanks for the lead........I'll check out Brillman.
The only reason I'm looking for wires is that only 3 of the 4 on my Cub are original........the fourth one got replaced somewhere during its life by a previous owner. The 3 I have work fine, just need to find one more. I want to keep everything original until I find time to do a full restoration. If worse comes to worse and I can't find something identical I'll contact some of the Farmall cannibalizers on eBay and see if I can buy a couple old wires. I see them all the time on distributors they've pulled and are trying to sell. I'm a bit hesitant to do that because once they think the old wires have value they'll want $20 apiece for them. Capitalism........you gotta love it!!
thanks again for your help!

If you replace a wire then it is no longer original.

Re: 2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Ouch! Tough crowd.
Muleboss.........when you're right......you're right...........I stand corrected. I should have said I want to keep my Cub as original as possible, and in areas where I couldn't keep it original I only wanted to use correct parts (which I define as parts originally installed by Farmall on Cub tractors of the same timeframe or NOS). Now on the flip-side........the spark plug wires originally installed on my Cub are not date coded, so installing an identical (same construction, configuration and length) plug wire from another Farmall tractor made around the same time as mine would go undetected by the originality police and judges alike. Only you fine folks here on this Cub forum would know that only 75% of my spark plug wires are truly original, and that one was a pretty convincing, albeit correct, stand-in.
Wow.......not sure I'm going to be able to sleep tonight with all that hanging over my head........but I'll try. And to think I almost totally blew it by telling you guys which cylinder spark plug wire I need to replace. Whew......that was close!
Y'all have a great night!

bob

Re: 2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Just a thought: If the Cub is in good original condition, you might want to consider preservation as opposed to restoration.

Re: 2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Hi Bill E Bob (love that username),
Great point. I'm a big fan of original vice restored. I've had my Cub for a little over 20 years now. It's got a 59" Woods mower on it and I used to use it to cut my pastures, but a pair of horses replaced it for that, so now it's more of a shed queen. While the paint is all original........it's not in the best condition. That's not to say it's too far gone to be kept original.....but I've seen better candidates. I live on a peninsula surrounded by brackish water, so airborne corrosion could be worse, but anything metal outside does get surface rust on it eventually. I've yet to find a spray on clear that's truly invisible, especially on bare metal. So preserving with a clear coat over the original paint doesn't appeal to me and cleaning her all up and leaving the paint and bare metal exposed won't look too hot in a few months......so restoration may be my best option. Right now I'm not in much of a hurry to do anything with it and I can keep any surface rust at bay with a can of Fluid Film. My '39 Farmall A makes a bad noise in the rear axle, so that will get priority once the weather gets better.........and the Cub may spend another year in the shed unloved. But not forgotten.
;O)

Re: 2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Don,
I did check Brillman. Seems they use the same 2 types of wire for every application, just change the ends and lengths. So I'm guessing at this point that the original style wires I have are not being reproduced. I also peeled back one of the 90 degree boots on one of the new wires I got that are claimed to be custom length for the Cub. The lengths were good, but the terminal doesn't look anything like the original. So that idea won't work. Might have to go to plan B. Or C.
thanks,
bob

Re: 2nd Gen Cub Spark Plug Wires
Install a new set of plug wires, spray or slop some IH red paint on them. No one except you will ever know.
Original spark plug wires were probably supplied from a number of different manufacturers. All of which were not identical. Just worked for the application.

I have an excuse. CRS.
